HVX200A - Lens Education

We have an HVX200A and we use it for feature length films and a lot of short commercial type work.

We currently have never used any additional lenses for it.

Can someone give me a lowdown on what kinds of lenses might be worth investing in and what the benefits/advantages to having those lenses might be?

For example, would a 35MM lens make a significant difference in the picture quality/appearance ?

Not sure I understand, hvx200 has a fixed lens, with that said, your only options are to screw on a wide angle, or telephoto. Now if your thinking 35mm lens, you would need a 35mm dof adapter, you focus on the ground glass in the adapter with the camcorder lens, then use a 35mm as your focusing lens. I think this is what you mean, not totally sure though.

I'm very ignorant when it comes to the lenses.

I thought there was a 35mm lens option that screwed on like a telephoto or wide angle, but I guess that's not correct.

Can you tell me what exactly one does with a 35mm adapter when using it on the HVX? The purpose of using that etc.

Also, when using the HVX, do most people usually not use extra lenses and just go with the fixed lens for the most part?

If the only lens changes people make are to Wide angle and Telephoto, in what instances would it be beneficial to switch to those lenses?

Are there other lenses besides those 2 that should be used occasionally?

I don't have much knowledge on lens purposes & differences.

I appreciate the help here.

Yes, look at " REDROCK ENCORE 35MM DOF ADAPTER" Many many people have used these to give their camera a more film like look, it gives the ability to blur the back round ( shallow depth of field) You can use any manual lens with this adapter. If you do find that your interest in one, I have a redrock encore m2 for sale, with a few lenses, and everything you would need to connect it to your camera. look into it and let me know if your interested, If not It's going on ebay. hope this helps.

I have several questions:

1. Is the 35mm adapter just used for blurring purposes? And what kind of differences does it have opposed to using depth of field with the fixed lens? For example, if when using the fixed lens with no adapter, if you put the camera close to a subject in the foreground and zoom in on an object in the background, one can achieve focus on either subject while the other is blurred. Is there something that the 35mm adapter lens does that achieves something more than that?

2. Does the 35mm lens give the picture a different look? I know when you put a wide angle lens on the HVX, the picture quality isn't changed, but the image just becomes wider. Is the 35 MM different in that way?

3. You mentioned Wide Angle & Telephoto lenses as the lenses people use sometimes on the HVX. Are there other lenses in addition to that? And could someone give a quick rundown on the purposes of each lens? Like a scenario in which you would want to use a certain lens and when you wouldn't want to use a certain lens? etc.

Thanks

I think 35mm DOF adapters are more trouble than they are worth. With my HPX170 which has a similar fixed lens to yours I have benefited with using a screw on diopter filter (B&W 72mm NL3) for extreme closeup work http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/10115-REG/B_W_65076270_72mm_Close_up_NL_3.html

Other examples of screw or bayonet mount optics that can go wide and telephoto include:

What are the situations you would want to use some of these lenses as opposed to not using any other lens than the fixed lens that comes with it?

there are several reasons for using some of these lenses, really depends on the situation.

i would use an 35mm adpater when i want to isolate the fore- and background from a scene, to get the viewers attention to a specific area of the picture - you will get the shallowest depth of field sith such an adapter.

i would use a wide angle or fisheye screw on lens when i need to do a wide shot of the action in a limited space and my standard wide end on the fixed lens would be to close

i would use a tele converter when i need to do a close up of the action but my distance between the action is to long - the long end of the fixed lens wouldn't give me that shot otherwise

take this just as examples, there also can be artistic or several other reasons to use such a lens

hope this helps, sorry for my english - i'm not really good in explaining something :)
