I just got off the phone with Panasonic Support (800-524-1448) regarding a problem with my camera that they are now calling a firmware bug. They say they will pass it along to engineering. However, I want to see if other people are encountering this issue. Even though it's on my camera and the camera Panasonic used to test on their end, I doubt it is global, and that's what is so strange.
The issue is that when a card (in my case, R-series or E-series) is formatted in an HVX200A and then recorded to, at least 1 or 2 times out of 5 the first clip will not have the expected User Clip Name of 0001XX. Rather it will have a strange number, maybe 0008XX or 0054XX, and often it's 1024XX. Format the card, shoot again, and perhaps the first clip number becomes 0001XX. Format again, shoot again, and the first clip is 1024XX, or 0008XX, etc. Doesn't matter if you use User Clip Name Type 1 or Type 2, if Metadata Record is on or off, or if you Initialize the metadata. It may happen more often in Slot 2 than in Slot 1, I'm not sure.
I had never heard of this issue before seeing it in my camera. Panasonic had never heard of this issue either, but when they updated a camera on their shelf to the current firmware (4.10-00-0.00), their camera did the same thing. Two days of testing later, they still can't figure it out.
However, this firmware has been out since June 2009, so if it's a bug, why hasn't anyone else reported it? Which is why I'm asking the $1M question: are you guys finding the same thing?
Note, you can check your firmware version by going to the MCR/VCR (thumbnail) screen, and click MENU -> PROPERTY -> SYSTEM INFO. The quick way to check the Clip Name (rather than connecting the card to your computer) is MENU -> PROPERTY -> CLIP PROPERTY.
I posted about this problem a few days ago (http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?245228-Has-anyone-seen-this-bizarre-User-Clip-Name-error). Sorry for the repost, but I thought it was warranted considering Panasonic is now calling this a bug.
