Hello

I was all set to buy the HVX200 and then i saw an ad for the PMW-EX1.

Should I be swayed to go with the SOny??

I still shoot SD sometimes and I don't think the Sony will allow me that option - correct?

I compared the specs on B&H and the Panasonic has a slightly bigger chip and variable frame rates.

Would love any input on either camera.

THANKS!!!!

Tons of input all over this site, use search and you shall find all of it.
One thing you should def look into.
The Sony EX-1 uses a CMOS chip with rolling shutter, as opposed to HVX200's CCD with global shutter. If you don't know the difference, definetly look into it and look it up.

I'm in a similar quandry re: HVX vs. EX.

I'm in a similar quandry re: HVX vs. EX.

There's one thing that few people are mentioning in regards to the two cameras -- the fact that the HVX is a more mature system with more knowns and easily available accessories such as UW housings, wide and telephoto lenses, etc. There's a huge knowledge base of users who know the ins and outs of the HVX and this is worth something when you need help and advice. Also, the P2 workflow has been around for such a long time that people have it down.

The Sony does look impressive on paper and I like the manually adjustable iris and the fact there are no tape heads you're hauling around.

I'm leaning HVX or HPX (or some combo of the two) depending on production requirements.

It's a little soon for another vs. thread. There is plenty of info contrasting the two. Articles, and several comparisons with varying opinions. Figure out what your needs are and purchase the system that will match them the best, or handicap them the least (as both systems have their tradeoffs. You just have to figure out which ones will be an issue to you).

Figure out what you need the system to do and get the one that matches your needs the best.

Google around. There are plenty of comparisons, and everyone has their own opinion, which may or may not be relevant to what YOU need. It's not an uncommon topic, so you should be able to find plenty of info to help you make your decision. It appears as though you haven't done much research yet. The Panasonic does not have larger chips. The EX does. Both offer variable framerates. Learn the differences between cmos and ccd (check the articles section here). etc, etc, etc, etc. You are going to spend a lot of money. Do yourself a favor and research the products and spend your money wisely. Don't just take the first thing a few people say and run with it. Only you know what you plan to use the camera for. This is a topic that usually goes downhill pretty quickly, so it's nothing personal. Once you know more about both systems, feel free to find an existing vs. thread, or a thread that covers a specific question and ask away when you have something more specific to ask, and have a bit better foundation of understanding of the differences between the two systems :)

Thanks.

Later
