I have just recieved my copy of THE ORE

This is the first time seeing HVX footage other then my own on my television. And i have to say i was a little confused by what i saw. My hvx footage looks completely different from the dvd the ore. The ore looks a little too much like video. The footage i have shot looks a little more filmic. I am just wondering why since we shot with the same camera , so do they look completely different? I am talking more then just the way we color correct. Because i have shot in similar locations such as this film and my stuff looks way different.

Curious why this is or if anyone else have made that observation.

Hey PIMP!

Couple of things could cause the differences... Shutter speed/angle is probably the biggest one. Lighting. Frame rate, post processing, etc... The good news is if you're getting the desired look from the stuff you shoot, then you're doing ok! :)

The thing about it is that I shoot in all these enviroments under natural light and non lit situations. And it doesnt look as "videoish" as the entire "ORE" Someone even gave me a commercial dvd given to potential buyers of lofts in downtown los angeles. It was shot in non lit locations and it didnt look "videoish".

I am just curious as to why this is. Could it be how they encode it or make duplicates?

Off hand it looked like 30P and not 24P. Might be wrong but it seemed the motion handling was more like a 30 frame vs a 24 frame.

Just and idea,

Jan

The scene in the opera house looked extremely videoish. And can someone explain to me why the film looked horribly compressed. But when you look at the behind the scenes stuff before it was edited the footage looks really clean.

Its a question of artistic choice. And it was their choice. Its just my belief that the hvx creates a better image then the one they came up with. If you see the unprocessed footage in their special features it looked nice and rich. And they applied like a skip bleach process over it. And in my opinion it made it look too videoish.

I've never seen The Ore so I can't comment on it. Though, I have been reading your thoughts on this thread. While your eyes are definitely seeing a difference I'm of the opinion that you don't know what your talking about. I don't mean it in an insulting manner. But its pretty obvious you have very little experience with digital.

Fact: The HVX is a DIGITAL VIDEO CAMERA. Anyone thinking anything else is honestly fooling themselves. Sure, the 24p mode can and does help the motion and image look more filmic, especially when the right conditions are present. But more often then not the images are video and will look like video. Very good video.

As someone else said, perhaps The Ore was shot in one of the other various formats or framerates this camera offers. Perhaps that is the look they desired for the project. It could be a million different reasons that all go back to your original questions. Why does your stuff shot on the the same camera look different then someone elses?

Why do peoples' still photography look different even though they use the same lenses and film stock? Or feature films under the same conditions? Or why do all the features shot on the Genesis look different?

Because no two users are going to create the same image. Everyone's eyes see different, and people work in different ways that produce different results.

As for the disc compression. Depends on the program they used to make the DVD. Perhaps that was the best they were able to do with the equpiment they had. Have you put your images to DVD to see how they look, or have you just watched them on your computer? Because nothing shot on HD is going to look as clean when its dumped down to SD and then compressed for DVD.

How do you know your stuff doesn't look like video? You might not think so, but maybe if we all saw it we would think differently.

My advice is you learn about your camera some more and digital video as a whole. Then, come on here and ask questions that won't end up insulting the people who put forth the effort to make projects such as The Ore.

Didnt mean to insult anyone. I am just saying in my opinion the footage they had before they color processed looked better then what resulted. I might be wrong its just my opinion.

There are no wrong opinions..... :) Just offensive ones.... ;)

Its cool, not everyone things the Ore looks good. Though i remeber their trailer was SLICK. For somereason i cant view the film on my computer.

How many of the 80 something different combinations of shooting formats have you actually used with
your HVX? Then out of all those different formats how many of those have you gone deep into the menus and tweaked settings such as gamma, detail, color temp, master ped etc.? If you were to spend some time changing settings on your camera and trying out some of the different features and formats you wouldn't have to ask the question.
