HVX200 -- tape to computer, NOT from P2 cards

Hello all,

I have an HVX200 camera with both Mini DV and P2 capability, connecting to a MacBook Pro with OSX 10.6.6. I am using FCP 7.0.

I do not have my footage on P2 cards, only on Mini DV tapes. I shot in 480i/24p. Yes, standard as hell. It's what my clients wanted.

Here are my issues:

1 - The camera won't mount on MacBook Pro at all. I've used both a 1394 Firewire (4 pin to 9 pin) as well as a Mini-B USB to USB connector and neither works.

2 - On my camera, I do not have a "PC Mode" under Camera>Menu>Other Functions. It goes from 1394 CMD SEL to END SEARCH to REC LAMP and so on......no PC Mode! Is this deterring me?

3 - I installed P2 drivers that came on disc with the camera. Not entirely sure if it's the latest and greatest edition.

My question is....do I have to have my P2 drivers updated on my MacBook Pro for this to work? I am NOT pulling my footage from P2 cards....I'm trying to use my camera simply as a deck for my Mini DV tapes to be put on my computer. On my old DVX, it was simple....connect, put in VCR mode, and voila! Am I missing something here?

Thank you in advance for your help!

Just as simple as the dvx...make sure the cam is in tape mode, then go into vtr mode. There is toggle switch on the back...I'm guessing your in p2 mode. You should then be able to digitize in real time. No drivers needed, no mounting either

The camera is in tape mode with the toggle on the tape side...still not working.

What does it mean, don't remove pulldown during capture?

If you're capturing through FCP, there's an option to remove pulldown during capture. This is for 24pA only, not 24p standard. If you try to remove pulldown with 24p standard, the footage will be a mess.

If the computer isn't recognizing the camera, it's possible that there's a problem with the firewire port on the camera. It can be damaged if you connect to the computer first and then plug the live cable into the camera.

I've had similar issues that have been fixed by simply moving the firewire cable, or slightly altering the firewire position on the end plugged in to camera. Very annoying when it happens.
