HVX200 tape import question

I currently have a DVX and am upgrading to am HVX. I assume, for some clients who are unprepared, I'll be using the tape option, because of the time limits of the P2 card (the job I'm currently working, clients are supposed to do short little interviews, and will screw up and revise their wording for up to an hour, and I can't afford a 32gb P2 at the moment). For my DVX, I use a cheaper DV camera for importing, so I don't put as much time on the DVX. I remember, at one point, a friend had an HD camera that recorded SD to tape, and the tape wouldn't import, or even play (asside from running timecode) because, I assume, an HD codec was being used despite being SD on tape. I'm wondering if I'll have a similar issue with the HVX if I try to import footage shot from a tape using an SD camera.

The HVX only records SD to tape (to record HD you have to record to P2 or some kind of external device). I don't see a reason why you can't import footage using the camera or play tapes on the camera with footage originally recorded in standard (non high definition) DV tape.

Yes, I understand that. But, as I said, someone else had an HD camera that recorded SD to tape, and the tape wouldn't import or play on an SD camera. So I wondered if anyone knew from experience.

Some cams can record HD (hdv) to mini dv tapes. This is not playable in a normal sd camera. The Hvx200 can only record SD to mini dv tapes (not hdv). Using tapes in your hvx200 isn't going to generate any better quality then using the dvx100. Since its only sd on the tape any minidv cam can play it back. This is not true for some sony cams that tape in HDV not SD.
