HVX200 record to laptop

I've read online you can record straight to laptop using Adobe On Location...
Is this true? has anyone done this with positive results? I would be shooting things like weddings, so camera would not have to move much. Thanks

Have done it many times.

The only thing you can't record is pN mode, because the camera doesn't send it out through Firewire. But that's OK, because it will strip repeated frames if you shoot in 24P mode or 30P mode.

Wow... that is really good to know... because I was seriously stressing over getting additional p2 cards or a firestore

Cards are better for many reasons, so you if you need them, you should get them. But if you can't, then OnLocation works just fine. It just doesn't give you all the advantages the cards do.

Of course, many people would advocate shooting using OnLocation even if you're recording to cards for the fantastic scopes and tools it has.

Agreed. Cards are great but if it's a static wide shot and no need to move the camera, you can't beat on location...unless you try ScopeBox;) *I've no affiliation with ScopeBox! But do love their product...and their scope options as I use the 200a without scope options in cam. Worth a look! There are a lot of video capture choices on the market these days. Do some research and save some coin if you're not in need of the rest of the Adobe suite

Before running out to get 'on location' or 'scopebox', i was wondering whether there is a maximum length of stream time from the HVX200E into on location? However I would only need it to record for roughly 30-40 mins maximum, but if i am not misunderstood, don't some hard drive types prevent you from creating files that large in one hit? Or does it create a series of smaller files for example.

i am wanting to capture in the cameras 1080i/25p mode, so that i can blend with footage from a 1080/25p Nikon d5100.
Thanks.

The only limit is the drive space you have. As long as the drive is formatted NTFS or HFS+ (Mac), and not FAT32, there's no practical file size limit.

Heres something to keep in mind. I use OnLocation with my HVX200. The program determines the record settings...you can't. So....when I import into final cut pro directly from the P2 card...it transfers...and I dont have to render unless I add an effect. When I record directly to a laptop via OnLocation...it records, somehow, a diff. codec or something that it would on the card. So when you import into final cut pro you have to render right away to preview. I also found that on a i7 macbook pro it took FOREVER to render out the video in to another format in compressor.

I've done quite a bit of recording of multi-hour seminars using an HVX-200 and ScopeBox. It saves the files in the native DVCPROHD codec with all audio channels in a QuickTime wrapper, ready to drop into Final Cut. Two things to watch out for though: I've had audio-sync issues on long recordings where the audio is about a second off, easy to fix and it doesn't drift over time. Also, if the recording is critical you may want to simultaneously record to P2 as a backup because I've had corrupted files on rare occasions under certain conditions (don't try recording to a slow USB drive!). This shouldn't happen anymore in v3.
