HVX200 P2 Clip problem

I have an hvx200. I just completed an assignment for a client and now have audio problems on import, and tracing things back I also have PLAYBACK problems in the camera. It will not playback the clips in the camera to check the audio.

Strange problems

I have FCP7.

I transfer the clip then use log and transfer to get the clip in to the FCP window to allow you to view and convert the clip. When I look at the settings I see 4 channels of audio. Channels 1&2 show audio but its the same channel. (A mix it appears of the original explained below. 3 and 4 show the volume as I input it, but I didn't set for 3 and 4, and they don't import.

CHannels 3&4 show audio the way I recording it. One channel a little below the other (on camera mike) and the wireless.

In the field the audio was recording channel 1 wireless and channel two was set to internal. I double checked and they are set that way.

It sounded through the headset fine and the audio monitor showed good levels in the viewfinder.

WHen I play the clip back in the clip window for import I hear lots of noise with a bit of audio coming through. If I turn off all channels I still hear the noise.

WHen I convert the clip and play it back there is audio, but it seems to have combined the two channels into one. I can tell the wireless is there because I had interference on one shot and I can hear that.

It will not convert with separate channels. It is mixing the onboard mike (used for safety) with the wireless channel. Making the levels the same for both.

So I went back and tried to view the clips from the camera and when I highlight one and press and the play button nothing happens. Same problem on all four cards. Three 4 gig, and 1 8 gig.

Any thoughts on what is going on. Hope the camera is not bad. It doesn't have that many hours on it using P2 maybe 30-50 hours. Never had this problem before.

Is there a setting in the menu that could be the problem. I have gone through them, but don't see anything that catches my eye.

Any thoughts or help would be appreciated. I can't erase the cards to reshoot a test, because I might have to input them to another machine to see if they do the same thing.

The not being able to playback in the camera is a real bummer.

Mac osx running fcp7.

Update. I used a mac notebook running fcp 4.5 and input a card. The audio was the same. Both channels mixed and set to equal levels on each channel. They are mirrors of each other.

ANY thoughts on how this is happening.

Ok,

I have been trouble shooting this and I have found something interesting.

If I take a clip and use the p2 input viewer/editor screen. Go to settings and toggle the sound from mono to stereo (and for me its the brackets for Stereo) I still the noise and the crazy stuff with the 4 channels. But when I use "add to Q" button I put it on the timeline and the audio is correct.

I can't leave the settings and do a batch drag and drop. It mixes the audio everytime.

Whats strange is when I input using the G4 867 notebook and used the card slot to input the footage directly, it was not separated. When I used the P2 window in 4.5 FCP and then placed the footage on the timeline, it was mixed?

So what the heck is going on.

I am going to do some more experimenting to narrow it down, and see if there is a way to use the notebook and get the audio separated.

Still no reason for the clips not playing back in the camera.

Can someone with FCP7 verify that using the toggle switch in the mac P2 importer/converter in settings under the viewer window, that toggling the Brackets is Stereo.

Its seems to be camera based with it doing it in two different machines with two different versions of FCP.

I am (was) running an older version of firmware and have upgraded to version 4.06 today, I can't seem to get 4.1 to take. It doesn't see it on the card, it saw the 4.06 and upgraded. I used panasonic bullets website and they didn't have the newest version ( few months difference). Finally found Panasonics site with google, and saw the 4.1 while looking for drivers etc.

I tested in the G4 867 notebook. It is exactly the same issue. I can take the footage into the viewer window manually turn off channels three and four. Make sure its in L R with the brackets on channels one and two. click add to que and I get clear separate audio. ( however I still hear distored audio when I play the clip in the viewer.

I dug up a clip from a past shoot and looked at it. I don't know if I had the internal mike on and switched to use channel 2. I did see to two distinct channels of audio and I could make out the audio, but I DID have extra noise in the playback (loud overdriven audio or electronic junk), but audio was recognizable (sorta). On timeline its clear and clean. I did not use the viewer window to render the clip when I rendered it. I used a drag and drop into que on a batch render. Now as I have explained anything outside of using the clip window and ONE at a TIME have to render my clips.

Reading about the audio I found comments about audio problems with the camera. That it is recommended to not put the internal mike into 1 or 2. That it will automatically be recorded onto channels 3 and 4. Going to test that out and see if its the internal mike causing all the problems. I Don't use it that often except to capture ambient or a interviewers questions for the edit. Which was the case in this shoot. The audio with the hard mikes or the wireless were fine. The audio on the internal is fine.

Why the transfer issues.

Carl,

I love PowerBooks, and use them in my workflow. Though after upgrading to Leopard, I found my performance dropped significantly when using FCP's Log and Transfer feature. Maybe the audio is lagging and that is the distortion you hear?

Hope that helps,
Andrew
