HVX200, or DVX100B, for SD only?

If one were planning to reintegrate themselves back into the industry with the skill of an assistant or an editor what system would be more useful to learn Avid or Final Cut Pro Studio? Can they do the same things for about the same buck?

Here in the UK, the last three broadcast jobs I've had all use Avid.

I shot some footage with the HVX200 as a B-cam off angle for presenters doing a webcast at work where the A-cams were DVX100a. Admittedly, the DVX100s look gorgeous as always. But everyone I've shown the HVX200 footage to, has told me, upon A-B'ing the footage to "no no go back to the other one, I dont' care about that one"

They wanted to see the HVX200, even scaled down to SD. I agreed.

I'd agree. Final Cut Pro is gaining a lot of ground, but Avid is still the standard over here.

Personally
I did not go the route of HD for the following

1. Unless your going to broadcast you're end user will NEVER see the difference
Your paying another 2k and not going to ever see what you paid for on someones home theater system.
2. The HVX though an awesome camera requires the P2 cards to do HD another $600, however if going HD this is THE affordable one
3. Most end users unless they have an HD TV wont be able to view HD anything
4. Most end users cant tell the difference in HD and SD anyway
5. Next year technology will change again and be more affordable and closer to consumer HD play back devices, still required an HD TV of some type

I have the DVX100B and for $3500 it's the best camera out there. Next choice would be the XL2 then the Z1U.

Think of who will be watching your stuff.

Hope that helps.

The HVX shoots dvcpro50, it should look a lot better than mini dv. Likewise for downconverted HD.

also, dv50/hd better for green screen and cropping.

Shooting HD also future proofs your work.

I don't know about next year's technology. I don't even know what underwear I'll wear tomorrow--hopefully it'll be clean...

Buy the DVX and after a year or 2 sell it on EBay you will still get 2000 or more for it and then buy the HVX
that is my plan and I am sticking to it

I'm fully aware of all that as well. I personally don't believe in buying something and not being able to use it's full potential. Down converting, seems like going backwards. This is all just my opinion though. Remember some end users cant tell the difference and dont know the difference. We can as we are looking for that stuff. Future proofing, well when I need an HD camera I can always rent one as well till all my stuff is HD required.

The HVX camera kicks @ss and I'd love one if it really made sense I would have gotten it.

Just trying to give insite on HD SD and price and getting what you pay for.

Downconverted HD or DVCPro50 looks SOOOOO much better than DV, I can't even begin to tell you. Even if it's just going to DVD the difference is stunning. If you want the best SD picture, shoot HD or DVCPro50 --- it's not even a question (and I'm speaking from personal experience).

I'm not sure I agree with you.
Film downconverted to SD looks pretty damn good to me.
Same goes for HD.
