HVX200 NTSC in PAL countries

Hey everyone,

Before anyone says "do a search"... i have, on both this forum and on google. I can't quite find the answer im looking for.

I have moved from Canada to a PAL country and brought my equipment (HVX200) over. I then realized mine is not the PAL version, but the NTSC.

I looked online and thought the HVX framerate hack would solve my issue, but i cant get it working or im simply doing it wrong. I know you cant shoot at 25fps... but all the articles say you can shoot at 50fps. I can't seem to get it to 50 (other framerates like 2fps are fine). I also then noticed no audio (not sure if i got it to 50 if it would also have no idea).

I dont really want to go and get another camera as the 24pN feature is very handy on this one and I use it a lot (besides, I travel a fair amount and mostly to NTSC countries).

What is my best way of shooting with my camera now so that it can be given for 25fps PAL broadcast once done. Shooting in 60i and then using converter to get down to 50fps just makes it look weird and not favorable. I couldn't figure out how to use cinema tools for this (and im also unclear as to how i should shoot).

Can anybody help me out please? I need to be able to have good looking PAL footage from my NTSC hvx.

Thank-you!

You're right about 25fps-not possible.

To get to 50p you need to enter "FRAME RATE: 29 " when you edit the scene file (if you're not doing so already) Don't think it will record sound as its not a default frame rate on the NTSC HVX.

You could shoot 24p and speed it up to 25p.

I've tried FRAME RATE: 29 (and FRAME RATE 36) to get 50... but it doesn't work. stays at 24.

other framerates (like 2fps etc) work fine tho using the hack.

Hey llirik,

You could shoot 24p and speed it up 4% to 25p like Kingswell suggested. This is a popular method of getting 25p from 24p. You're audio will need to be sped up as well.

60i to 50i is slightly trickier and requires actually take the 60i to 24p then the same speed up to 25p. You can do these speed changes with After Effects and possibly with some NLE's.

Another method would be to use a program like DVFilm Atlantis to convert NTSC to PAL. You simply put your final edited 60i file into Atlantis and let it do the rest. There is a free demo and more information here: http://dvfilm.com/atlantis/index.htm

Hope this helps,
Andy

That's very strange llirik. Not had my HVX in many months, but i'll see if i can get 50p as I've never tried it myself.

24p to 25p may be the answer. As Andy says your audio will be similarly affected. Pitch will be higher, but sometimes this isn't a massive problem unless you're doing a music video.
