HVX200 my review

Today, after much cajoling and whining, I was able to procure an hvx200 for field-testing. I’m sorry to say but this camera doesn’t live up to the hype. In fairness, what camera could? For openers, just as everyone says, the HVX looks like a DVX with an eating disorder—or perhaps a DVX raised in Nebraska. It’s a porky little son of gun but in a cute Rosie O’donnel kind of way, not in a spooky/gluttonous Marlon Brando kind of way. The unit I had was used in several of the trade shows, it was one of the promo units so it may not perform like the models now shipping.

The Controls: are set up similar to the DVX. DVX users will have no problem with it.

The Styling: it’s black.

The Build Quality: Since mine was a promo model, it’s made out of wood. I’m not sure if the production models are also made of wood. I realized a major drawback to wood—termites love it, so I cannot in good conscience recommend wooden cameras.

The Image: The unit I had produced no discernable image. None, Zippo, nada. I consider this a possible deal killer. Isn’t capturing moving images the whole point? Again, the unit’s inability to capture images may be due to the fact it’s a promo unit, but I for one am not going to risk my 6k on something that may not work.

P2: another big let down. I tried everything to make the P2 card fit in the camera, I even tried sledge hammering it into the camera which actually revealed some serious shortcomings in the p2’s build quality.

Overall, even though termites eat this camera and it can’t capture video, I’m still going to buy one.

yeah those damn balsa wood prototypes.. you think that with a little paint and a piece of window glass on the front at least they would take the cards.

Balsa wood! The grain on that wood is horrible, the coloration is way too saturated, and it is much too soft.

Yeah, I'm buyin' one too.

Brian,

I bet Santa and his elves would buy it for next xmas! I remember how guarded that log was when it was here in Orlando. It has a bullet-proof pope mobile and everything. That block was the envy of other prototypes around the globe. Think Santa as the fattie has the benjamins.

It reminds me of the commercial for Staples they played during Christmas. Santa's elves made digital cameras out of wood, and the saw dust was sprinkled over the cameras as "megapixels". :)

don't know about yous guys..but I'm sick and tired of waiting for panasonic to grow enough trees to supply the wood to make the camera with! And all this talk about the rain forest depletion! jeez.

yeah...

you're right, its weakests points are the termites...

heh heh...Geeeeeez !!!!

OK now, let's be rational...i finished reading the manual...I want my camera !!!
(I'll swim to Japan...heuh...yep !)

Hey
My Problem with this comes down to the GRAIN issue...
Panasonic should have realized that Grain wood be a problem from the very start.

Sick thing is I would even takje a balsawood prototype now
