that's the monitor i'm thinking of getting, but i wanted to know if in order to use it if It'd work if I bought a SDI cable and then SDI->VGA adapter for the cable to plug into the monitor?

im almost certain that it doesnt. the manual doesnt mention it. and its the first thing mentioned in the HPX170 documents. so id assume if it had it - it would at least be listed in the video output specs...
and there is no SDI port on the camera (only d-connector to component).

Oh my bad that was me being dumb. I was mixing S-Video with SDI in my head for some reason.

What cables would I want for best video with that monitor then?

jeez. i wouldnt bother jumping through all those hoops just to send an SD signal. you have an HD camera. find a monitor that accepts the HD signal in the format the camera sends...

My issue is I can't afford that much right now. For most HD monitors I've found I can't get a decent one for under $900~

find a used ikan v8000.

and if youre not trying to mount it on camera (which would be a pain in the ass with a big vga cable +adapter anyway) then you can sneak by with a consumer HD tv with component input

Based on the Lilliput monitor you provided a link to, it appears you are looking for a camera mounted monitor for better framing than the small one on the HVX. If you choose that model be sure to purchase the optional component input they offer for $5.00 more (??) if you want to connect it to your 200a. The 200a has monitor out connections for s-video, composite and component only. Using the component out will offer the most flexibility and is the only way you can connect your camera to that monitor reasonably.
