HVX200 may be used at Winter Olympics

The latest print edition of TVB Television Broadcast magazine, Sports TV Production (Page 54), has an article on world pool footage supplier Torino Olympic Broadcasting Organization (TOBO). The Winter Olympics run from 2/10/06 to 2/26/06. The article states that TOBO will be using P2 memory cards and shooting in the DVCProHD and DVCPro50 formats. The article also talks about how new mobile POV cameras will be used to get creative coverage of hockey, etc. Looking at the delivery date for the new HVX200 (12/05?), and the formats and storage that TOBO is going to use, I'd be surprised if TOBO doesn't bust out a few HVX200's for use at the Olympics. For some reason, probably feed and client network demand, TOBO will be recording all HD coverage in 1080i. Not a problem for the HVX.

What better coming out party for the HVX200?!! A significant part of my TV work is network-airing sports production. I'm already planning to buy two HVX200's for my company. For this work niche, and many others, it would help for the storage capacity of P2 cards to go up, and cost of them to go down...

being a camera operator (figure skating) at the forthcoming winter games, I can confirm the use of p2 technology but not the hvx 200.
Anyway p2 has already been used in Sidney so it wouldn't be the first time.
I 'll let you know in the next months if things will change.

Do you mean that the HVX200 will not be used in figure skating coverage, or do you have knowledge that the HVX will definately not be used for coverage of any other venues/events? Are you hired to be a hardlined shooter, or an ENG-style shooter? In figure skating coverage, the HVX would be excellent for "behind the scenes" shots in the staging area, and for mobile lifestyle breakaway shots and lifestyle mini-segments of competitors. Are you a camera operator for TOBO, or some other entity? I'm aware that P2 was used at Sydney, but now that the P2-using HVX is ready to ship in December, it is a logical tool for certain applications at the Olympics.

I've directed and shot extensive national TV coverage in the United States of professional skiing and snowboarding events, dating back to 1988. If I was directing TOBO coverage of those events, and many other events at the Winter Olympics, I would be using the HVX200 for ENG-style, run and gun, close quarters, POV and cutaway use. It's small, mobile form factor would simply allow shooters to get creative shots not possible with larger cameras.

I just checked the TVB Television Broadcast web site - www.televisionbroadcast.com

TVB doesn't have the latest version of the magazine online yet. The reference to the lates issue and article I originally posted came to me via hardcopy in the mail. At least half of the magazine is devoted to Sports Television, so as a sports shooter, you should seriously think about applying to them for a free subscription. You can do that online at their web site.

At the last workshop in April it was too soon to talk about hvx200.

I think I will be ENG shooter. They use more experienced personell for fixed hard positions. For those who are at the first olympic like me there's the ENG position.

I do agree with you.
We made some practise with sony dv cam before the beginning of a friendly match
and we used it in that way for pre-match coverage of an hockey game.

I was hired by TOBO.
I did a selection and got the job :-)

it's logical but i don't know the other members of the crew and who decide what to use.It would be great to be part of the game with any sort of panacam on my shoulder or hand.

lucky you! sport always give you special emotions!

I hope the crew will give me this opportunity, in the next workshop in September I'll ask them details about this aspect.
