HVX200 low light noise level....

I'm about to preorder the HVX200. Granted there are a lot other problems that could exsit. One worry is the low light noise level.

I've heard a lot of DVX users complain about the low light video noise.

In regard to noise level, how do you think the HVX will stack up against the DVX or HD100?

I realize it is not a 2/3" CCD camera, but I do hope Panasonic has addressed the low light noise level the best they can.

Since Panasonic is offering pro level capabilities, they should match its features with excellent video quality.

Actually, the DVX is about as good as any of the 1/3" progressive cameras out there in terms of its noise performance. The HVX is still an unknown, but I would suspect that it should be in the same ballpark as the DVX.

There isn't really another camera that seems to offer all that the HVX does at anywhere near its price point. Certainly, the advantages that the DVX offers will also be part of the character of the HVX, so I don't think you will have much to worry about.

The HVX is *fantastic* as far as noise goes. They're showing footage at ResFest, I just got to see it yesterday. It so thoroughly exceeded my expectations for noise that it wasn't even funny. It looked every bit as clean as the Z1. Much cleaner than a DVX, and what I saw looked significantly cleaner in chroma noise than the HD100. Panasonic has a history of listening to what we, the users, want. Someone must have told them "low noise", because they sure took that to heart!

Now, granted the camera isn't "done" yet, and Jan says it's at about 80%-85% as far as how good the image looks. I thought it looked extremely impressive. Extremely. There were a couple of things that I noticed about it being "not done" yet, but hey, it's "not done" yet. By the time they're done fine-tuning this thing, I think it will be most impressive. Also, it was being displayed on the 720p LCD system, so it was 1080i cross-converted to 720. Had it been displayed on a native 1080 system it would have been easier to make an accurate judgement.

See it for yourself if you're in L.A. at ResFest, and I think next week it'll be in Chicago...

Just got back from rez-fest LA.
Man is this thing clean, fantastic dynamic range and shadow detail, unbelivably clean, no noise in the shhadows, detail to spare, Pany has done it again! I can't wait to see the 24P footage!

Great to hear, Barry. REALLY great. Noise has been one of two things I've been whining about constantly (that and image flipping) and it seems both requests were listened to (although the image flip wasn't implemented, but at least Canon picked it up and it should be on the "200a."

Chroma keying should be amazing on this. 1080p with 4:2:2 color and low noise would be ridiculous. Although I'd shoot in 720p most of the time since it's a much simpler workflow, having 1080p still helps with special effects, etc. (After all, I think a lot of studios shoot vistavision/70mm for effects shots, 35mm for everything else or so I've been led to believe.) I'm so tempted to buy this thing...if I sold my dvx and spent every penny I had, I could pull it off...I think.

Oh, who am I kidding? Being a poor college student sucks sometimes. If I quit drinking and started showing up for my job I could probably afford it, though, sadly but I'm not ready to spend all my hard-earned cash.

Great news !

Great news !

Thanks for the quick replies!

I'm extemely amazed with Panasonic, once again, they really are the drive
in the tech industry! I'm preordering first thing tomorrow morning.

Although I'm new to posting on this board, I spent some time "catching up" and have really learned to respect the talent here!

By the way, I work for a division of Nikon. It's odd that they never got into video. I'm sure there are vaild reasons we can all gather.

I just bought a D2X. That cam rocks. Got any extra 17-55 2.8s laying around? Or better yet a D200? He He?

No seriously, do you? The only thing that wets my whistle as much as Pany is Nikon.

Er... don't want to burst any bubbles, but you might not want to count that chicken before it hatches. I talked to the Canon guy about that feature and he said that the image flip is only available if the stock lens is removed -- apparently he thought it would be applicable for a direct-link relay lens (such as is used by the mini35). But the G35 and Micro35/M2 don't work that way -- they work with the stock lens.

So for do-it-yourselfers, the Canon won't do the flip either...

No doubt one heck of a digital SLR. I have considering purchasing one of these myself.

Evinsky,
The Nikon division I work for is in Photo Lithography (Intel). These cameras are extremely expensive almost 15 million each !
ouch...

Ditto that Barry. I just saw the footage on the Egyptian's movie screen, and I mean, I really was blown away by the clarity and detail on that big screen. I mean the dynamic range was stellar, and there was no noise at all. I couldn't fault anything in it, and I really tried. I also saw some stuff Jan shot at night, and it was clean as heck. I figure you'll have to add gain just to feel like it's not a still shot

I am ****ing DYING to see this for myself!!! I've been working late shifts Thursday and today, Friday, so I've missed everything at ResFest so far. Does anyone know if there are any scheduled HVX200 demo footage screenings at the Egyptian this Saturday or Sunday at all? I can't find any of this information on their website!

I think someone mentioned a $10 paid entry into a shootout on Sunday at noon. Not sure if HVX is amongst them.

I was really impressed by how clean the signal was. I don't know that I'd say it was utterly noise-free, but I can easily say that I felt it was every bit a match for the XL2 and FX1 regarding low noise. I didn't get to see it on the DLP, I really would have liked to.

I gotta say, I was floored by the low-noise performance. We all have seen the crawling blacks in poorly-exposed DVX footage, and I was expecting some of that. And while we love Jan to death, she's an engineer and a marketer, not necessarily a pro shooter, and so I expected that shot-out-of-the-hotel-room-window footage would probably show the camera at less than its best. Well, if that's the worst it can do, holy cow are we in for a treat! I lobbied heavily to get ahold of the camera before RESFest so we could get some professional cinema-style footage shot before its grand unveiling, and that couldn't happen, so I was wondering how it would turn out with that out-of-the-window footage. Now that I've seen it, I think it's probably more informative to show it at that level -- if someone can just point and shoot out the window and get that level of clarity with no noise and no smear and no chromatic aberration (other than whatever that blue flare was)... well, that's a really impressive demonstration if you keep in context what you're looking at.

We should see some professionally-shot footage sometime around mid-November, so about six weeks from now.

I know you were LOL'ing, but I actually agree, and I was thinking that as I was watching it... the 1080i mode absolutely has that super-clarity "looking through a window" high-def feel; it had a clarity and "snap" that I feel the Z1/FX1 was missing. I can't wait to see the 24p footage, but if it's as clean as this is, we probably *will* want to add some grain to it to make it even more filmlike.

Well, Barry . . . these are VERY encouraging posts, indeed! (What the hell is everybody doing up so late?) Anyway, looks like I might have just been won over to the P2 side of the coin. I HATE NOISE. If the HVX200 is as noiseless as you've all seen, well then . . . I might just have to hold off on that "big camera" purchase and SERIOUSLY reconsider the HVX200 again. I mean, the small form factor of these little 1/3" cameras is a HUGE production advantage (also, a huge disadvantage regarding DOF characteristics, but hey--this has gotta stop somewhere!). Thanks, guys! Barry, are you in L.A. right now?

On Sunday at 12:00 there is a $10.00 admission seminar with David Leitner where he discusses all of the little cameras and shows some footage from each. David has shot a lot with the Z1 over the last year but he gives a fair hand to most.

Best,

Jan

Not currently, I drove back last night (and got in at about 6:00 a.m., which explains why my schedule is so "off" and why I'm posting on this silly board at 4:30 in the morning!)

But, Barry, of what use would that be? The Mini35 already has "flip" optics... Do-do heads!

Well, that's the question. And I asked that specifically. Seems that they were implying that if you made your own relay lens, that's when you'd need it. He also said something I thought was quite confusing, which is that a B4 adapter would need the flilp. And I'm wondering -- why? Unless there's some optical element in the B4 adapter that unnecessarily inverts the image, why would you need an internal flip for a B4 adapter?

So, in the end -- I don't get it. I don't know where they're coming from. I asked Kaku on the DVInfo board to try out the flip thing to see if he can get it to work with the stock lens attached (which is the configuration G35/M2 users would be using). He hasn't found it in the menus yet...

Gee, Barry, I'm just sitting here nodding my head in disbelief. This is unbelievable. These are all Firestore cameras, plain and simple. I don't see how Panasonic could 'own' the entire market, but it's hard to see why anyone would pick the others, really.
