hvx200 in final cut pro

I just recieved my HVX200 and am messing around with time lapses and such. I am not recording in HD, but am using 24p and Squeeze Mode. What settings should I use to capture and edit in final cut pro, and also to export? I have tested it a few times and I can't get FCP to stop stretching my footage vertically. I am trying, ultimately to edit in SD 24p with 16:9 aspect ratio. I want to be able to burn this to a dvd and see the black bars at the top and bottom on my 4:3 tv, rather than seeing a bunch of vertically stretched footage. I've changed my setttings to anamorphic, and also to 24p timeline, but once I export, I can't get FCP to stop stretching. Thank you so much for the help, I've just switched from vx2100 to HVX and this is very frusterating.

Hey.

I moved from a VX2100 as well...

I've never used Final Cut, but I often do the same widescreen SD exporting stuff, and I've discovered something. If the output is ALWAYS intended for a 4x3 size with black bars at the top and the bottom (i.e. common SD TVs, youtube players, etc.) then I find it is simpler to place the 16x9 footage in a 4x3 project, and shrink it down so there's black bars. This way, the black bars are actually part of the pixels in the video, and you don't have to worry about different devices getting the aspect ratio right.

Anyways, about the stretch thing... (someone correct me if I'm wrong, which I probably am, because I suck at life)

Recording in 480 'squeeze' mode results in 720 x 480, with a 1.2 pixel aspect ratio, as opposed to the normal DV pixel aspect ratio of 0.9. I don't know final cut, but if there's some way you can adjust how it interprets the footage, and manually TELL it to change to (1.2), you should be golden.

The footage that I'm watching looks interlaced as well, but if i'm shooting in 24p, it should not be interlaced at all, correct? It basically looks like **** on my widescreen mac monitor, and it is still vertically stretching it, even with all anamorphic options checked on my FCP sequence. I just want to be able to capture my wide footage and watch it wide, not stretched. I feel like the loss of quality, and the overall jittery appearance of the footage is coming from the stretching. Anyone else have any suggestions?

to verify a little more, when i export my footage, which final cut recognizes as being anamorphic, i then fullscreen it in itunes, and there are black bars on the sides of my footage, stretching it vertically. There should be black bars on the top and bottom instead, leaving it in the correct format.

No, wait. I think I have an idea. But I'm probably wrong.

Once again, I'd like to remind you that I don't know FCP.

An NLE sees "Anamorphic" as having a 2.0 Pixel Aspect Ratio (PAR), meaning the pixels are twice as wide as they are tall. If you're shooting in Squeeze mode, you need a PAR of 1.2. Standard DV PAR is 0.9. I THINK that this is your issue:

You're bringing in 1.2 footy, and telling FCP that it's 2.0. So it's messing up.

No, wait. I'm a total idiot/buffoon. That would make it too stretched horizontally. Wait... would it? OH MY GOD I'M SO CONFUSED

To get your aspect ratio correct make sure all the clips in your browser have been flagged for anamorphic. Then simply drop those clips into a 4x3 timeline and FCP will letterbox them for you automatically. Also make sure the timeline setting is using the same codec as you shot in, ie, dv, dvcpro or dvcpro50. Also because its progressive make sure field dominance is set to none on the timeline setting.
