Hi Guys,

I am new to all this but trying my hand at Film Production.

I got my HVX200. But the question is do I need both P2 cards and FS-100 to record DVCPRO HD or I can just do with FS-100.

I am a little confused with this. Can any one of you experts help me with this?

Thanks

I am no professional, but you can record DVCPRO-HD to the Firestore with no P2 cards. I don't own any P2 cards, and I shoot with the FS-100 just fine.

Why get an FS100 when you can go with . .

- no moving parts
- no extra batteries to contend with
- no extra cords to content with
- lightweight
- direct reporting on the HVX200 LCD panel & veiwfinder
- easy simple to use" P2 cards

???

Longer recording sessions if you're alone on set?

Gunleik
Uses both...

I use both as well, but I have to say, when I can shoot to the P2 cards, i do. If you're in a studio/interview environment and want long takes, go with the FS. If not, P2 is the way to go.

Longer recording time. I record full sets of music.

how much i regret my firestore! i bought it for a project because i was having trouble tracking down P2 cards. the only benefit of the firestore is for long takes/recording time.

it has no thumbnail clip review, you have to be more careful about setttings(one scene that was supposed to be shot at 720p24N got changed in the firestore from P2N to P2 ( i have no idea how because this happened while i was betweeen takes and nobody changed it(i know that because i dont let anyone else touch it) and finally unless the camera is going to be static, the firewire connections are so flimsy that i just dont trust them and have lost shots where they ever so slightly got bumped. after this shoot is over im selling it and buying a 32gb P2 card.

I use the fs 100 most every shoot. I do tons of run and gun as well as studio interviews etc. Were talking rough stuff here... Alot of motor sports, jumping pits walls, we even have an HVX200 mounted on a jib with the FS100 attached. Never had a problem with format PN or P or the Firewire and preview is a snap.....plus Drag and drop into timeline for edits!

If you add up all that time spent swapping cards during the shoot then loading each individual card for capture My money says at the end of a year you will have spent enough money pay for at least a few new lenses. Not to mention the cost of enough P2 cards to match the 90 gig you get out of an FS100.

And I love 90 minutes of DVCPRO HD. Im not an Inde and am not used to having to load every 12 minutes. I guess if thats the world you come from (film) then swapping cards is no big deal. Bottom line is I guess it depends on work flow and how fast you have to provide content to post.
