HVX200 Depth of Field Chart/Info

Has anyone created a DOF chart for this camera?

If I'm shooting a subject in a room at 10 feet at f4 at full wide angle, how much room do I have to let the subject walk forward and back toward the camera if I set the focus at 10 feet?

Or can I maximize the DOF with a hyperfocal setting?

Does this test need to be done with a large HD monitor or projection to really be able to tell the focus?

Thanks for any help.

There are various depth of field calculators on the web. There's also a depth of field widget if you're running Mac OS X. The widget allows you to select what size sensor you're using (from 4x5 to 1/3 inch).

if you want more/deeper depth of field, then set your aperture to, say, an 11 or anything smaller than 4. This will give you a longer focus range. You will have to slow down your shutter speed, in order to compensate for the light loss of the smaller aperture.

Hyperfocal distance:

1. ----------*-----------FP-----------*--------------------
------------------------- S->->->->->->->-S----------

2. -----------------------*------------FP----------*-------
--------------------------S->->->->->->->-S----------
(man am I bored)

FP=Focus Point
S=Subject
*=Focus Range

In the first diagram, you are measuring your focus from the subject, which gives you focus range in front and behind. So if he walks forward, he will soon be out of focus.

In the second diagram, you measure your focus when the subject is half way in the transistion. Then start him back, but still in the focus range. Now he has more room to walk and stay in focus, because he is starting at the beginning of the focus range, rather than the middle.

Sorry if this turned out to be really confusing.
