HVX200 Default Film Cam Mode shutter... Not 180d??

I thought the default in FILM CAM mode was to shoot footage at 180d shutter, no matter what (thus meaning that overcranking uses a higher shutter, eating up more light but keeping the motion blur consistent in relation to the frame rate).

However, when I set the synchro scan shutter to 180d degree manually, I notice that when I turn the shutter "on" to 180d, the picture looks darker than with "shutter off" .... In fact, I noticed that leaving the shutter "off" (when it SHOULD be 180d by default, or so I thought) looks the same as 350d synchro scan shutter!?!

What's going on here?

anyone else noticing this? I noticed this again. 720p60p -> shutter off is identical to 1/60 shutter... which is 350d! (NOT 1/120 shutter, which would be 180d).

Well?

you're thinking wrong on this. since you are overcranking with the intention of playing back at 24fps, then increasing the shutter speed will result in a fast shutter look. it's not about relationship between frames. it's about absolute shutter speed when overcranking with the intention of slowing down for playback.

if you shoot 60fps at true 180d or 1/120 then when you slow back down to 24fps it will have a more stuttered look like when you shoot 1/120 at 24fps.

if you think about each frame as a still image then it gets easier to digest. if you shoot a still at 1/120 it will have much less motion blur than if you shoot at a 1/48 shutter. the amount of frames you shoot per second does not change this look.

if you really want 1/120 when shooting 60fps then set it that way. don't use shutter angle, just use shutter speed.

EDIT: i just re-read your post. "shutter off" is not default to 180d. you have to select 180d in your shutter speed choices with shutter ON. shutter off defaults to 1/48 when shooting 24fps and when overcranking it will stay at 1/48 until you go to 60fps which would be impossible to shoot at 1/48. at that point it jumps to 1/60. if you turn the shutter on to 180d at 60fps it does shoot at 1/120 but this will not keep your motion blur consistant, just the opposite.

You're doing something wrong. I just tried it: 720/60P @ 1/60th looks exactly the same as 720/60P @ "shutter off".

You must be in film cam mode with some different frame rate selected or something.

i think he was under the impression that shutter off at 60fps should default to 1/120, not 1/60.

I believe I understand what hes talking about and wanted to clarify this. When the camera shutter is set to "OFF" in a 24p setting (such as 1080p 24PA) he believes that the shutter speed is 1/48.

When he turns the shutter to "ON" the frame gets darker and then the "180.0d" shows up. 180d in digital world usually means 1/48th shutter. So what he is asking is:

Since "OFF" should be 1/48th why when he turns it to "ON" and the 180d shows up, does he loose light, when in theory 1/48th and 180d shutter is the same thing.

Any answers? I too am actually pondering this now that I see it for myself. Is the defalt shutter speed really going to the digital 1/24th? (impossible in film) or is the default 1/48th at the "OFF" position... If so what's with the huge light loss when you switch to "ON" 180d?
