HVX200 -Create NTSC DVD Sorenson recommendations?

Hey I have a feature film shot on the HVX200. I have authored several DVDs by exporting (from AVID) a Quicktime Reference file (with 16x9 settings).

I then have placed the file in Sorenson Squeeze and have squeezed the file (from 110 Gigs to a 5.20 gig file). Then the file is compressed again on DVD Ulead Factory so it can fit on an 4.30 DVD-R. I have done this several times (each time it takes hours in the Sorenson Squeeze step) and every time i get slight artifacts annnnnnnd just a slight motion blur hear and there. The blur resembling an image set at a lower Synchro Scan as opposed to the jerky or ghost image.

My question is this. What is the best possible setting in Sorenson Squeeze for the image to be as crisp as it can be.

Is there a preference from VBR, CBR and 2 pass VBR. Has anyone outputed to Sorenson Squeeze and had a beautiful image etc. I generally find outputting to tape first and then going to DVD the image has much less motion blur. But can't rent a deck everytime i need to output a different cut of this feature.

Anyone have the "perfect" Sorenson Squeeze Ntsc DVD large settings?

thanx,
Omar :)

I don't use Sorenson Squeeze and can't help you there, but one thing I know is that you don't want to compress twice, especially if the second time around the source is MPEG2.

Figure out the bitrate you need to get your film onto a single-layer disk, and encode it ONCE using Squeeze, then load the file into DVD Factory, and adjust the project settings there to match those of hte MPEG2 file -- that will allow DVD Factory to use the existing file without any re-encoding, all it will do is multiplex the audio and video, and create the required DVD data structures and files.

You can find a good bitrate calculator here:

Unless you have more than an hour of material, there is no need to go to VBR encoding, just use 8Mbps CBR. If you go to VBR, you should use multi-pass encoding to take full advantage of the available bandwidth.

Thanx i just outputted the movie movie again. This time using your suggestions (using CBR and changing the kb per sec in Sorenson)

I would say the fact that i had avoided compressing again in DVD factory, the image does look better. Much crisper, yet there still is a slight "trail" or judder movements on some of the images when the characters move quickly. This never happens when i output directly to tape. Has anyone on this board outputted from HVX200 to Sorenson Squeeze. Any suggestions for settings?

Omar
