Hi guys,

We just shot a film with the HVX200 and I'm wondering if the files are somehow compatible with Final Cut 4.0 - which is the version I have -. I've been trying to capture but no luck. Do I have to get the new Final Cut Studio to be able to capture P2 card's files or there is a way to work with the earlier version?

Thanks much!

The simple answer is no: you can't edit or import P2 files using Final Cut 4. The ability to edit P2 files arrived in Final Cut 5. The current version 5.1.2 allows you to edit almost all the formats supported by the camera.

A sort of simple workaround would be to downconvert the P2 footage to DV format in camera using the dub mode. You then have the footage on a DV tape, which you can capture and edit in FCP 4.

But be aware that if you do this, you are down converting to DV - you don't have an HD copy on tape.

So, all in all, you should really get final cut studio. But if you just want to get the film finished, the down converting route works fine. As long as you backup your P2 files you could always remaster an HD version later when you have the newer version of FCP.

see if Apple is still letting people crossgrade up to version 5.1.2 for $99....that may have ended in December though.
