HVX200 can't dub 480i to tape

This may not come as a shock to some users, but I'm currently working on a gig where I just found out I cannot dub 480i DV quality P2 footage to MiniDV tape?

Seriously? What gives? I mean, you're telling me this amazing cam can down convert 720 or 1080 to MiniDV, but it won't even do a simple P2 to tape dub of DV quality footage?

In this particular situation, I'm working for an audio visual company who has brought me on this gig (and hired out my HVX200 and other gear) to shoot these meetings. The client wants Mini DV quality footage with a final delivery of MiniDV tapes and MPEG4's. However, the company doesn't want to pay me the time to import those Mini DV tapes, so I'm shooting P2 to speed up the process of the MPEG4 conversion. I then simultaneously link the HVX to my Sony DSR-11 deck via firewire so I can shoot both. However, I found out while shooting today that my deck is stuck in DVCAM mode, and I'm only getting 40 minutes per tape. I can't unstick it without the remote (which I don't have) and I thought, well no big deal, I'll just dub the tapes afterwards with the HVX's handy dandy dub feature.

Not so handy dandy.

You are correct -- it cannot dub DV from the P2 card over to the DV tape. It can downconvert HD to DV tape, but it can't dub it over.

wow, thats good to know. i saw on Barry's DVD where you can do high quality DVCPro 50 on the P2 card. didn't know you can't dub it to minidv.
i need to pay more attention while watching those DVD's...LOL

Barry,

While there's nothing anyone can do about it now, don't you feel this is kind of lame?

I mean, a straight conversion over process would/should be easy for that camera to do. I wonder why the Panasonic engineers decided not to implement that feature into their camera. Especially a camera that is the staple piece of equipment between SD and HD.

I've always thought it was a silly omission and never have understood why it doesn't allow a simple direct digital file copy.
