Hvx200 Canada Late Arrival Date

So bad news on our part.

We pre-ordered the HVX200 from a company here in BC and received bad news that it won't be available until maybe Mid-February. A month and a half more than what all Canadian distributors almost guaranteed - it wouldn't be so bad except for the fact that we already pushed the shooting date of the feature back one month, and now we have to push it back another month...I hope this doesn't keep happening...I was really counting on using this camera and I don't really want to use anything else. :( I called all CDN distributors and it's the same story.

Ordering from the U.S is too late because each store has like 250 waiting list.

Disappointing.

Not all stores are reported as having such deep waiting lists. The ones with a lot of publicity and big web presence, yes. But some of the smaller dealers may have much shorter lists, or so some on DVInfo have said. Call around to smaller dealers, maybe sort of near you (try the Panasonic dealer locator on their website, type in some zipcodes in US states nearby) -- maybe you'll get lucky and find someone who's expecting it sooner?

I'm hoping to get a more definitive date out of Panasonic this week but I haven't heard anything about as late as February officially. I intend to look into this and let everyone know.
Barry is right - smaller shops do have smaller waiting lists. We still have a couple of spots on our initial order.
Cheers!

It's interesting to note that David Craig's dvcpro.ca Web site was taken down over the holidays and redirected to the main Panasonic Web site. His was the only Canadian site connected to Panasonic that said the camera would be delivered in December 2005.

Just writing again to confirm what Norm reported. My dealer also says that Panasonic Canada is "hopefully" getting some in for the second week of February, but no certainty for that or what quantities.

This sucks.

I've called over 30 different places in US / Canada now and no one has a sweet clue when they are receiving their orders. On such a large expensive order, wouldn't they be provided or have access to a tracking # to see where the freaking boxes are and how long it should take to arrive!!?? Even if I order a $100 DVD player, I get a tracking #...a $200,000-$1,000,000 order of HVX and they don't know where the shipment is?

Yikes...Panasonic is killing us all and it's not funny anymore.

I don't think they're stuck in transit. They're just coming out of the factory very slowly -- a handful at a time.

I think what is throwing people off is that Panasonic raised the expectations that the December 29 launch would be akin to something like the Xbox -- an official date with dealers secretly getting shiploads of product in advance, and then magically, on the "big day," the doors open and everyone gets theirs at the same time.

But it wasn't that kind of launch. December 29 was the official date of a trickle. As units are assembled and QC'd, the people who pre-ordered earliest get the first ones. (I can imagine it's a nightmare to manage the priority list continent-wide.)

It's a tough call which approach is better. If Panasonic had've gone with the "Xbox" approach, these useful, money-earning tools would've been sitting and waiting in storage for months until enough quantity had built up. The official launch would've been more likely March or April.

At least with the current approach, some people are getting cameras they can put to use, as well as alert the rest of us of any potential problems.
