hvx200 breaks clips into 12 minute chunks. question.

Hi there,

I've searched around and can't find anything regarding this. I don't even know what key words to use for a search. Anyway, here's my problem.

I'm shooting with 2 Hvx200s. For very long takes [say a thirty eight minute shot], one camera creates a new clip every 12 minutes while the other camera just creates one long clip. Both have the same 16gig P2 cards. So in this example, one camera creates 4 clips [12 minutes + 12 + 12 + 2], while the other has one large 38 minute shot.
It's not a big deal, as I can simply put the 4 clips end to end in post production, but it's still slightly annoying and strange.
I can't find any setting that is different on the cameras.

Any suggestions?

Thanks for your time!

All HVXs and all P2 products will split clips up into 4GB chunks. That's the way they've always worked and always will work.

P2-aware products (such as the cameras, and certain software like P2CMS or P2 Viewer) will know how to stitch those clips back together into one continuous clip. If you shoot a 13-gigabyte clip on a single card, the camera will display it as one clip, but if you go look in Windows Explorer or the Finder, you'll see that it's actually made up of four clips.

I don't know what software you're using to examine your clips, but I don't think there's anything out of the ordinary likely happening here.

Wow, thanks for your time Barry.
You totally hit the nail on the head. It was just the device I was looking to view the clips.

ps - thanks for all your education on these wonderful cameras.

What I don't understand is why, like you said, it sometimes splits these clips and sometimes doesn't. I've seen this too with my HVX and can't make any sense of it.

It always splits clips under the following circumstances:
1) if the clip's individual size exceeds 4GB
2) if the clip uses up all the space available on the card, thus causing it to roll over to another card.

I'm having the same problem --- suddenly. After a year of shooting continuous clips that can last an hour or two, tonight, my camera decided to start a new clip every 12:22:22 mins. How can I get it back to the way it was?

Thanks

fat32 has a limited bit size. Thats why firestore's record 2.1gb files. NTFS is higher, but I'm not sure what file size cap is.

FCP issue

FCP issue

This just happened to me. It's an issue with ingesting using FCP, not an issue with the camera.

Dump your FCP preferences:

1. Close FCP;
2. Go to home, library, preferences, and delete the files: com.apple.Final CutPro.plist; Final Cut Pro User Date; and Final Cut Pro User Settings;
3. Restart FCP.

Now when you ingest those long clips, they will be full length and not cut into 12 min pieces.
