HVX200 - Avatar

I just saw some behind the scenes of Avatar and James Cameron was using a HVX200. I wonder what he was shooting with that camera?

who cares?

all kinds of footage from all kinds of cameras (even VHS) are incorporated into movies, tv, what have you... i dont see how this matters any more than what shoes you wore to play tennis yesterday.

You may not care but I do. I'm going to see the movie when it comes out next week and if they used the HVX at all on the film I would like to see how it turn out on the big screen.

As for tennis I don't play tennis so I guess who really cares what kind of shoes I wear but if you want to talk about shoes I have lots of them what are your favorite shoes? I really like Keen have you tried them? They are great! Oh hell I can go on and on and on about shoes! As for dancing shoes I'm still not sure what pair I would really like but for just hanging out shoes Keen are pretty nice - hey did I just say Keen again DAM! I just said Keen again - yes if you guess it I have six pairs of Keen. So when you are filming what kind of shoes do you wear? I know what you are thinking I'm going to say I wear Keen when I'm filming and guess what YOU ARE RIGHT WGZN I was going to say Keen.

but you wont know. they will likely (especially in a huge post-heavy effort like avatar) have put it through so much post processing that you wouldnt know one format from another from one scene to the next. and even if you did, it would as likely have no relation to how you, i or anyone else on this forum would typically use an hvx, that it just becomes an exercise in conversation to even bring it up.

this kind of thing came up a week or so again relative to what kind of video camera they used on what part of what big theater release. and 97% of us cant tell anyway. the remaining 3% of folks who can tell were probably either on set or know somebody who was.

Uh, I think any professional application of the camera is interesting and worthwhile especially if it's an application that might be considered beyond the realm of where / how the camera is typically be used.

Beyond that, it's a tech forum where a bunch of guys like to stand around and talk about gear and go "ooh cool."

So ...

I mean I'm not planning on doing motion capture on actor's faces and making digital characters out of that anytime soon. But I still liked seeing the BTS on how they did it in Avatar.

Key word being "anytime soon" which is another reason to be interested. I may not be planning on doing that now, but I might in the future. I also just might want to know new options for VFX. This film, like Jurrasic Park, LOTR, supposedly really pushed the edge of CG creatures/characters and technology - reinventing the tech as they went / to suit their needs a la Lucas in the old days on the first few Star Wars films.

Given the fact that the film is an animation live action hybrid with animated characters created off actors performances like Golum, maybe the HVX was used to motion capture the footage? - decent colorspace, hi-def, progressive, easy to move around the set?

The way they worked was Cameron had a camera that he wherever he pointed it on the soundstage he woudl actually see the roughed out three d versions of teh set in real time. And the actors faces had like 20 motion capture dots to capture their expressions. Anyway - maybe the HVX was the capture cam.

and maybe it was his personal handycam... either way im out of the conversation.
you guys go have fun.

It was probably used to shoot scenes which would later be replaced by CGI. I was inside ILM's mocap stage a couple years ago and they were using DVX-100s for this. Said that guys like Speilberg like their cinematography a certain way so they let the directors and DPs shoot CGI scenes with the DVX and they use the shots when designing the actual CGI. I suspect they've moved onto HVX by now.

Who cares why Corine cares? It's enough that he (she?) does, and it's perfectly welcome.

What we do care about is that people not get jumped on for expressing an interest in some of the very things we're here to discuss.

I've seen that photo of Cameron with the HVX and presumed he was using it to shoot concept shots to provide creative guidance for his DP. It is fun to speculate.

When I'm on a set, my eyes are constantly scanning, absorbing, learning. Set photos allow you to continue feeding that hunger when you're off the job. Though, in a much more limited way...i.e. hey, that's a 1/4-20 male to male adapter being used to mount the camera tracking light.

Really earthshaking revelation there, hahaha.

For those of you that care there was another thread here a while back that showed Cameron using the hvx200 for Avatar on a small green screen set.

I find it interesting and like to see what others are doing wether it's a F35, stereo 900's or dvx100.

It is sad no be so aggressive toward someone who is interested in something. Curiosity is the only way to discover new things. Wether it is from inventing or learning, a solution always comes after a problem or question (even if I always say that there is no problems, only solutions).

Getting to know why they used this camera in such big movie supposed to be shot in 3D is interesting because it suggests that the footage may not have been used straight out from the camera. The question is : why an HVX? I think your tracking idea may be a solution (I haven't seen the actual picture therefore I don't really know). Maybe he was also having fun with the Making-Of/EPK camera (that's what I use)

Using many different cameras, even mixing film and digital is very common I have seen many Phantoms for hi speed shots on film shows. Just look at Cloverfield Have you ever seen a S*ny Handycam making such a sharp image like in the end.

and @wgzn : If you don't like this thread, that's your right. I'm sorry to say but I feel like you overreacted.

Well put! I'm also still pondering the question "why an hvx?"

thats so cool, ima brag to all my friends that they used my camera in avatar just coz they are so silly and have no idea what im talking about that they will believe me.....excellent

Does anyone have a link to the actual picture/video we're discussing about ?

Another threat I would love to discuss about is the actual camera they used for Avatar. Does anyone know ? (this is slightly off topic but if anyone has a link to more infos...)

I work in visual effects on many major films, the latest being 2012, as long as we can pull a decent key, we are more than happy.

If they can light the green, or blue, screens correctly, that's most of the battle. of course, the best resolution is always a plus too. Some films really fail in this regard, and we end up rotoscoping all the actors...... (Sky Captain)

I am actually about to buy a HPX 170, partially to do greenscreen testing. (not for features)

I don't know why, but I feel proud when I see this kind of pictures.

Mine Was (4 years ago) first HVX200 in my country. Certified by panasonic.

My tennis shoes are HD versions of the last years model. I think NIKE's are about 6K of info on a BSMOS sensor. The do suffer from some latency problems, which is why my jump is slightly askew at the hoop but hopefully the new firmware upgrade will let me do 60fps while I play some B Ball, WORD! I love this stuff.

Look closer to the watch he's wearing.
It's a Rolex Submariner. Twice the price of the HVX.

lol.... -__-
