HVX200 archive workflow... REV?

Okay, right now for the MXF folders (digital negatives), I'm using both hard disks and DVDs for backup. Although I've read that both media only have a shelf life of 5 years, maybe 7.

I've done a ton of searching. I see that a lot of people use tape drives. I don't want to spend the 2k on the drives with those slow speeds.

So I've been thinking about the REV 70GB drives and media from iomega. They claim 30 year shelf life and Tape grade reliability.

If anyone knowledgable in this area could help me decide on an option, I would be so grateful.

I've done so much searching and just can't come up with reliable info. I'm about to start a very important project that would kill my career if it was lost.

Thanks in advance.

Arrestthisman, haven't you asked about this before?

I believe we talked about this.

Anyway, I'm using it. No problems so far. Only problem I see is Iomega discontinuing the product. If you want something more reassuring, you can go for Grass Valley's own REV drive. Its faster, and its built to work with their new cameras. It uses the same IOMEGA REV cartridges, tough.

Just google it.

cheers

PS- Its not possible to give you a 100% reassuring answer, since the technology is new. You want reassurance? Than maybe DLT should be the way to go. Quantum has a very good track record, and its what major corporations use for backup and archive. They came up with an MXF aware drive recently, if I'm not wrong. It costs a LOT of money, but If its your career on the line, than maybe you should go with the most reassuring route there is. For archiving, it should be DLT.

I have a REV copy + a hardrive archive of my media. I believe this is enough.

I'm sure i've posted this question in some iteration in another thread on workflow.

I think we've even PM'd.

The point is, there just isn't much info available via search. I have a lot of friends in IT, and the most common answer I get is, nothing is totally reliable, so pick your preference (as long as it's reasonable), and pray to god nothing bad happens. The only consistent thing I get is that redundancy is paramount.

The REV drive isn't a whole lot of money. Still HArd Disks are less. ....

I've heard the REV is as reliable or more as tape. So... I guess I could also use hard drives, and transfer my data every couple of years to new devices. The one thing I like about REV is that if one disk fails you lose like 1/5 to 1/10th of a long form project or so. A hard disk is usually big enough to hold the whole enchalada, and it doesn't pay to buy small hard drives.

I guess there's no harm in talking out loud. I think talking this through is helping me choose.

Anhow, thnks for the input. Take care,

- Alex

DVDs from Taiyo Yuden are supposed to live for a few decades (CD-R up to 1'300 years). BTW Panasonic DVDs are from Taiyo Yuden too.... TY is said to be the best manufacturer for DVDs and pioneer of many new CD writing-speeds etc.

I've been using about 1000 Taiyo Yuden DVDs up to today and never had any error at writing or reading. So report others who use TY DVD-Rs.

I think you can't simply tell live durancy for DVDs speaking for ALL brands. If TY's laboratory tests are close to reality, then its DVDs could really live for decades.

What do others think about this subject? - Isn't it a matter of quality? Isn't it wrong to name ONE number (4 years etc.) as live-durancy for DVDs? There are DVD-Rs for 15cents but also for 1,2 dollar per piece. Isn't there a huge difference in quality and therefor live-durancy?

Did you ever come about a "Quantum" solution..??

You get bigger GB-numbers than using DVDs and they are supposed to work the next 30 Years...just check the quantum-page...i am thinking for some time already, but id like to wait for the next generation, mostly the keep the same price for the new deck and double the quantity for the tapes...check ist out!

DLT 4 could be for you, there is also another avanced one..just check it..!

2nd one i wanted to mention: with mxf-support SDLT 600A
