Hvx200 and MC project

Hi:

I have checked other post for this but I cant really get my head around it.

I just shot a project with the HVX200, in 1080i/25p. (DVCPro HD)

I want to start editing in Avid Media Composer 3.

What project type should I use. Do I loose quality if I use the Avid DNxHD codec?

I want to be able to loose the least quality and maintain the progressive look, so I can later have a good output and storage of the project.

I would really appreciate feedback or opinions on this.

Thanks a lot in advance!

CHoose a DVCPRO HD 1080 project. Since that is the format you shot. P2 MXF files can be edited natively with Avid MC 3, its as simple as importing them. But make sure that you do things right. Import from the archived card dumps, then CONSOLIDATE to your media drive. OR...if you wanted to, but no reason to really do this, you can TRANSCODE to DNxHD to the media drive. Not sure what gains you get with that. I certainly wouldn't do it.

DOn't want to lose quality? Then just import the P2 and consolidate. Here's a tutorial on how to do this in Avid...Avid has a whole channel at YouTube full of tutorials.

DNxHD is full raster, so you won't waste CPU cycles on DVCProHD's thin raster format during playback (Avid reformats DVCProHD to full raster during playback, I believe, eating up system resources).

Depending on your storage and system specs, transcoding to DNxHD may give you more realtime playback, especially if you're not running 3.0.x, which is better optimized to handle DVCProHD and HDV formats.
