HVX200 and ipod

Barry, so your saying is that we couldn't take a final project out from our NLE to one of the P2 cards. The camera is one way only. That kind of blows if that's the case. I'm mean, I'm still getting the camera regardless but it would be nice to use a function like that to screen shorts and little clips.

Drew,
I didn't read that as being the case - but I'm wondering why you would want to do that? That's like downloading a pic from you DSLR, editing it in Photoshop - then not printing it - but sticking it back on the CF, and putting it in the camera.... Yep you can view it on the back - but why?

You may have a specific reason for wanting it - but I'm not sure I can see why you'd want to view 'edited' footage in camera? There are much better methods of viewing you HD gear....

Anyway - doesn't the camera appear as a mass storage device on the PC? Therefore I guess you could stick clips back onto the camera from your PC, much like any other Mass Storage Device... "guess" is the operative there..

Cheers, Nathan.

I would assume that you could use it to haul around mp3s if you wanted to. But like Nathan, I don't much see the point.

No, I didn't say that at all.

What I said was that the camera itself can only control a drive to write to it. But that doesn't mean that you couldn't just output an MXF file from your computer directly to the P2 card -- well, at least on a PC. AFAIK, Macs won't even recognize a P2 card unless it's write-protected, which I don't understand at all. But a P2 card shows up on a PC as an external hard disk, so you could maybe write an MXF file from your NLE straight out to the card (I don't know that for sure yet!) Also, you can probably (not confirmed, but probably) firewire your project back to the camera, just like we do with DV tapes, and have the camera record the program stream right to the P2 card.

Speculation, yes -- but it seems reasonable.

Barry, thanks for the responce. I'm hoping that the camera can be used as a deck to view final projects on and hooked up to a video projector.

I agree with Drew... when I had the Z1 there were at least three client situations where the camera itself made the most sense to use as a playback device for an edited show. Why? The Clients didn't have ANY HD gear beyond an HD monitor. So, plug in the camera and watch the show... In one case the client only wanted to see the HD version of the project once in a larger venue, while the rest of the showings were SD conversions off of DVDs.

This subject has come up before, and I'm generically surprised when folks don't see the value of being able to do this. Until the time comes when we have a full range of inexpensive HD playback devices being able to use the camera as a way to view a completed show makes good sense.

Jim Arthurs
