hvx200 and canon xha1

I am shooting a concert and interview for a web program with hopes of further distribution in the future. I am using an hvx200 and they have a second cameraman who owns an xha1. is there anyway to make these two images match up properly? with enough time we could tweek and experiment but for this first "episode" we don't have the time. I am now asking for help from you fellow filmmakers. has anyone combined footage of these two cameras? if so what settings did you use?

if it is not possible we were considering using two different footage styles, static on hvx and handheld on canon. combining this with some audience camcorder shots to give a many different perspective look to the footage.

any help/input would be great.

thank you for your time and any knowledge you supply.

You are going to have to get both cameras together for a few hours to compare them - you can use the component inputs on a good quality TV since you're trying to match them, not totally color correct them - a good plasma with 2 component inputs would be fine...

You didn't say if you are planning on 24p or 1080i. If 24p, shoot 720/24pn with the HVX and 24f with the A1 - I've done this and they look remarkably similar (I edit w/ FCP6 in a 24fps timeline).

You have to decide on the matrix and gamma settings you like (this is very subjective - just read all the posts) - I use the CINE settings, but it does cut the light sensitivity, especially with the HVX and that's it weak point already.

The Panasonic cameras tend to have a lot more CHROMA than the Canons, so you're going to need to dial down the HVX or dial up the A1... -4 about or +4 to start.

HDV has more noticeable aliasing than DVCPRO HD so dial up CORING (+4) and dial down DETAIL on the A1 (about -2 to -4)... You might need to chase these settings with the HVX, because all manufacturers tend to set factory sharpness too high to show off resolution - that's why so many people dial down DETAIL.

MASTER PED on both cameras should be down -4 to -7. They tend to look more alike with the blacks crunched.

There is a noticeable color quality difference because the HVX is 4.2.2 - this is it's major strength and, to be honest, I didn't believe it until I worked with it (I'm actually an HDV advocate because it amazes me that you can get that good an image with so much compression and use so little drive space). You will probably need to do some color correction in post in order to make the two work together in a cut sequence.. easiest to dial down the DVCPRO HD.

When editing, work in the highest quality timeline..

By the way, the thing I DON'T like about HDV is the audio.. it is tinny to me because it is already over compressed.. so record all of your important audio with the HVX.

I think disjecta a member on this site created a preset for the xha1 called vividrgb or something like that which matches the canon up to the hvx. do a search for posts he has created

Yes he did and I use it to match an A1 to the HPX when another HPX isnt available. Works out fine. What I usually do is white balance the HPX and then use the same number on the A1 which can dial in any setting on increments of 100.

Mac mentioned the coring and detail levels, you can do it but I dont. My detail is usually around -2 always. MPEd minus 5 (about same as Mac).

Sorry not talking about HVX here but HPX colour is almost same as HVX.
