HVX200 advice

I am loking at buying a HVX200.

I demo'd both it and the JVCHd100 in a studio setting next to our sony dsr 570's(2/3 ccd)

they were both dark...smaller ccd's i geuss...the jvc proved unusable...way to dark on the lows and blown right out on the highs.

the HVX faired better with it's many gamma adjustments, where i could just about get a match with the dsr 570's.

a couple of questions though

1.i am looking at a longer lense for the camera...the century optics tele attachment. they say there is some vignetting at wide angles.
What exactly is this, and how severe is it.

2.I don't understand the knee setup on the HVX...what is it?

3.I tested the various codecs and found a very substantial increase in quality going from DV recorded on a panasonic minidv tape, to dvcpro
DVCPro was much higher quality, I didn't expect that...I thought they would be similar. In fact the difference between DVCPro and DVCPro50 is far less dicernable then the difference between DV and DVCPro.
Would this be a loss because of the tape?Or is DVCPro that much better??
(identical shot, lighting, gamma, ect)

1) The Century 1.6 is a great lens, very sharp and no light loss. But if you zoom out past about 17mm (or so) you'll see vignetting (where you're actually seeing the lens itself in your picture). So you can't zoom out all the way when you have it attached, you should stay at around 20mm or more.

2) the knee controls how highlights are handled; setting the knee lower will cause the system to try to "rein in" the highlights to make a smoother gradation before they "blowout"

3) DV and DVCPRO are identical (in the US/NTSC version). DVCPRO50 would be much better, but DV and DVCPRO are identical. In the PAL/European/Oceanic version, DV and DVCPRO are equivalent quality but with different chroma sampling, so they will be different.

Perhaps you inadvertently recorded DVCPro in 30p or 24p and theMini DV in 60i? that would explain a difference in quality.

i just checked the clip...both are interlaced...

it seems strange.... but the quality is much better with dvcPro

you guys have much more experience then me....especially since this is the first time i've used dvcpro....but they must be different encoding algorithms...same 25 mbit rate of course...
I realise they are both 4:1:1 and pro50 is 4:2:2....but I find I can see a huge difference between the DV and DVCPro, and a very slight difference between Pro 25 and Pro 50...

thankx for the info on the knee controls....I am very impressed with the level of control Panasonic has put into this camera....

Apperance of course, thanks for the correction Jim.

Perhaps settings inadvertently got changed when switching from the DV deck to the P2 mode? There should be no discernable difference between DVCPro or DV.

Could you maybe post screen captures of both tapes so we could compare them? It is hard to say what you are looking at without more description.

Are you seeing more detail in the chroma, or more shadow detail? Is DVCPro handling aliasing better? (jaggies on diagonal straight lines in frame) or what exactly are you seeing that is "much better"?

How are you viewing the footage?

Quality is in the eye of the beholder and language is a very limited medium of communication, so any information you can provide can help us try and explain the differences you are seeing.
