HVX200 @ 720p 24n to DVD conversion

Greetings All,

I'm trying to burn some dalies to DVD from 720p 24 naitive footage.
I am working on a mac using "FCP 5.0.4" and "DVD Studio Pro 4.0.3"
The HVX200 footage looks great on the FCP timeline, but somewhere in the journey to NTSC DVD it gets turned to ****. I suspect it's either in the addition of pulldown, or the downconvert. I am no editor, but I know my way around FCP, Compressor and DVDSP fairly well.
I'm sure this topic has come up before but for the life of me I can't seem to find the thread. Is there a kind soul who can answer this question, or point me in the right direction.

Many Thanks in Advance,

Skuzzle

:) Well you didn't say what your problem is.
You just said it turned to shi*.

That could mean anything.
Does that mean it is brown, or green, have peanuts in it?
Not sure what else it could resemble, but saying it looks like shi*, that's all I can think of.

Maybe you just need a new monitor to color correct it.

:)

Is the timeline SD or HD? If you do the conversion in the timeline it should be fine. I tried it and it turned out well, even though it was 60p HD turned into 50i SD :)

More specifically

More specifically

When I say the footage turns to shi*, I mean it is unacceptable video.
The Image shows massive Aliasing, is blocky and quite flat (washed out).
The problem is not my monitor.
I have tried using several different setups in FCP, including DVCPRO HD, DVCPRO50 NTSC, DV NTSC ANAMORPHIC. The HVX200 DVCPRO HD 720p 24n footage looks GREAT on the timeline in any of these setups, but once I try to export as a NTSC Quicktime file it gets trashed (see above). I have also tried to make a Mpeg2 via compressor with the same lame results.
I am definately doing something wrong. There is something I have missed. Is there no one in this Forum who has experienced this?

I was being facetious.

Aliasing indicates an issue of interlaced or pulldown.
If it looks good on the timeline, that's because it's an original file.
An NTSC file indicates it is interlaced, so it may be aliased when played back on a non-interlaced monitor, but be ok on your TV. You didn't state what it looked like on your TV.

What you need to remember is:
1. Computer video is non-interlaced, or progressive.
2. TV video is interlaced, or non-progressive unless it is on a plasma or HD set.
3. NTSC indicates some sort of interlaced footage, and a TV color space, not computer colorspace....so colors may look different when viewed on the device it's not intended to be viewed on. Tell us what it looks like on the device it's intended to be on.
4. A 24p file going to DVD needs to have flags indicating it is progressive.
5. Converting 24p to DVD requires a pulldown. This may show up as 29.976 after it is applied.
6. Postage stamp image means you selected the wrong display, pick the other.
7. Most DVD'scan play at 8MB/sec so pick that for highest quality image.

I am on a PC, so I can't speak directly towards your application.
