HVX200 + Letus Extreme + Zacuto Studio Package + Nikon 50mm 1:1.4 & 85mm 1:1.4 shot in 720p

Music by John Williams - Jurassic Park Theme

no lights, no prep, no strings attached ... just put the cam on the Red Skater and hit REC ...

I'm not a DOP, this was my first time playing with a skater dolly.
I'm not an editor, just had some fun in FCP. There is no CC, besides the day-to-night shots.
Vignette is left on purpouse ... I like that look.

let me know what you think

cheers,

Edi

Thanks guys, we are building the Red Skater and it is probably going to be distributed by a well known seller in US, as well as directly from our website.

This model was a prototype and at this time we are working on a complete redesign.

It is still going to be made of annodised aluminium and stainless steel. The final price will be announced by the end pf February. Anyway, think about it as half the price of its only rival. This baby has nothing to do with those plywood or other toy-skaters seen elsewhere.

The first small series will probably be available for sale early March.

I'll let you know ...

cheers,

Edi

That was really cool, eventhough it looks like that evil robotosaurus is about to do terrible things to the little one
And you got a 5 year old focus puller in training already, smart thinking

We are struggling hard to keep the final product below 3k. The first prototype, as seen in the footage would have cost about 2k, but I think we can do even better, in matters of design, weight, finish and options. It won't be a DIY at all ...

Stay tuned, in a month we will be ready

GREAT video! I also really enjoyed 'the making of'. Your son is a very lucky little fellow to get to play with such cool HW.

Can I inject a dose of reality here? The tracking shots need to be tightened up considerably. Focus wandered all over the place. You have to decide what your point of interest is going to be and stick with it. Pulling focus is a finesse that needs to be carefully executed.

Using a skater for arcing dolly shots is also a technique that needs to be practiced to be effective. Your shots are too far away from the subject to have the impact that a skater unit can deliver. If you tighten up on the subject, you also need to be very accurate when using the skater in order to avoid having the subject wander out of frame (which is the mark of a newbie - I was going to say amateur, but I don't want you to think that I am bashing you).

You have excellent equipment, you just need to spend some time to understand how to make it work for you. I realize that you said that you just "threw it together", but that's exactly what it looks like. You need to spend some time figuring out the geometry for the move so that you can keep all the elements in proper perspective. It's not something that comes overnight, you need to practice practice practice.
If you plan on selling the units, you need to present the absolute best quality footage that you can create. Anything else WILL look amateurish and diminish your product significantly.

The mindset is "Well, if the manufacturer can't deliver exceptional footage, why would I expect better results?"

I think that you have an excellent chance of having your design be a viable alternative to some of the more expensive units, but you need to polish your presentation.
