HVX what? NTSC/PAL

Question:

The HVX manages variable framerates, both interlaced and progressive, at lots of resolutions. Does that mean that it's region independent? Im thinking, if the camera could do all of these diffrent formats, it should be able to shoot both NTSC and PAL, which means guys like me (in Europe) could buy the camera a lot cheaper from the united states?

Nope- in this case the variable framerates do not impact the video standard used. There will be NTSC and PAL versions of the HVX. However conversions will in theory be easier.

and i suspect that's exactly what Panasonic try to prevent. besides.. im pretty sad to see again the PAL/NTSC division. i thought HD will finally put an end to it.

I thought it would as well, but the frame rate issue persists for backwards compatibility reasons. US HDTV runs at 60hz, European HD will run at 50hz.

I tried playing my HD100 in 25p mode back on my CRT HDTV -- it just puked. No worldwide compatibility here...

Although the HVX can record various frame rates in 720p, it does not have a 25fps option (unlike the Varicam which can shoot 25p in a 60p stream).

You could shoot 24p and convert to 25... but it's time consuming in post.

Personally I'm going to wait for the European version of the HVX... although I did drool at the idea of shooting 1/3 slowmo (60 for 24p) which you can do on the HVX200P but you can only shoot 1/2 slowmo on the HVX200E (50 for 25p).

Unlike the HDV cameras, which mostly are able to shoot 50 or 60Hz [even if it takes a firmware update to enable] I doubt a multi-region version of the HVX will *ever* exist because the 50Hz versions of DVCProHD work differently to the 60Hz versions (the resolution is slightly different).

Also, no matter how much cheaper the North American version is, you wouldn't have any warantee support on this side of the Atlantic.

IMHO Yes, it's a real problem but also it's not impossible handle with it. You are an american producer with your 24p/60i cam and if you'd be in Europe it will be the same, isn't it?

The question is: with a bit rate of 100 megabits vs 80 [1] and a 1440x1080 vs 1280x1080 [2] between 25p/50i and 24p/60i versions, there will be noticeable differences, for instance, @ big screen?
