HVX w/35 adapter

I was just screwing around a bit today with closed down iris on the 35 lens and the HVX. Trying to keep things around f5.6 and slower to check for diffuser pattern. I didn't push it far beyond 5.6, but didn't notice any pattern from the GG...

Anyways, I used 1/64 ND on the HVX most of the time. 1/8 the rest of the time.

Pretty compressed.

29 megs.

Oh, and Brevis was the adapter. 50mm f1.4 Nikon was the lens... It seems to breath a fair amount. This was like my 4th time screwing with the adapter so far. The compression messed with out of focus areas some, but for the file size, I can't complain.

honestly this is the best hvx-brevis footage I've seen so far, no vignetting at all, and pretty good contrast and lovely colors. Well done.

Thanks, man. I was just kinda screwing around in the front yard today. Trying to get a feel, and get some practice.
I wanted to use a more closed iris on the 35 lens to see how it held up.

I also wanted to see how far zoomed out I could be with the HVX and still get good edge to edge sharpness.

This footage was like z17.5 or something pretty comfortably on the HVX lens, so pretty wide in comparison to some numbers I have seen (kind of guessing though). The footage here doesn't show it much, but the edge to edge sharpness this far out was very good to my eye. Obviously much larger than a 35mm frame size.... but anyways.

Thanks for the comments, man. Maybe I can put up a better compression later.

Later,
Jason

Great footage from the brevis...but Z17.5?! Wtf?! i normally see 71.5. Personally I'm using Z75 on my DVX with letus economy

Yeah. z17.5-z17.9 is still all good if you get the Brevis centered right. At least for me. I usually run around z18.1 - z18.5. I have no idea yet what the 35 frame size would be.

But, I need to clarify a bit... That was mm/ft setting on the HVX. The Z number that other people have been posting for their adapters is about the same for me. Z70 would be about right. Just wanted to be clear. Z67-z68 would be the equivalent of where I shot this footage.

Hey Jason, the real test of seeing the GG pattern is to move the camera, particularly in bright areas. I have had a lot of success with the Extreme in a static position when the iris is closed down but the pattern becomes much more obvious when I move the camera.

Thanks for that information disjecta. I'll have to try it out. Like I said, I didn't really set out to test it, just wanted to try a bit of more closed down iris.... But, I'm a total beginner to the adapter world, so :)

Thanks,
Jason

well i didn't hear any music in the clip but i liked the way it looked. for some reason a lot of people using the brevis the footage doesn't really look that good, yet i've seen awesome brevis footage every now and then. i guess it's all in how you use it.

when you have your brevis or extreme, SG, M2 whatever attached, turn off the GG, then hit autofocus button and let the camera find its perfect focus on the GG. Then releasse the button, attach the lens, focus on infinity and repeat. you will have PERFECT backfocus and your footage will be razor sharp. your back focus looked a bit off.

Also remember the numbers on your LCD, for me my MF is 20 and my Zoom is anywhere bewteen 75-83 depending on what lenses I'm using with my M2

Thanks for that, Timur.

Yea then Gaff that somebitch down.....

alos periodically thoruh the day, put somehtign wth sharp text in front of the lens, focus on it, then hit autofocus again let it find perfect focus to keep the back focus sharp through the day.

Jason,

the last line of video, at the edge of the bottom letterbox black rectangle has some pixels appearing (clouds and later), can you see this, too?
Or I badly downloaded the .MOV?!

Jenny, I just checked, and saw what you are talking about. It's just from the heavy compression on the h264.

You can view a better compression if you want.

It's like 90 something megs though and the subject material isn't exactly all that interesting to warrant a download that big :)

But, yeah, it's just the compression.

Looks pretty nice, granted I probably don't have the highest eye for heavy scrutiny like some here do... However I like the shot where you pull each fence post into focus one at a time, gave me a pretty good idea of how nice f/1.4 is.
