Thanks Ben. We need to make the switch to FCP. Premiere Pro is the bane of our existence. God I hate it. At least you can tell when it is acting up and save before your whole PC crashes. Sorry to rant. Good job.

I'm a premiere fan myself.

Great work on the video. I'm from nebraska so it's nice to see the midwest represent! Great job!!!

Great video...

I couldn't stop watching it. Looks like high resolution film, HVX doing a great job in your hands !
I'd like to see a DVD resolution version in my monitor :)
You can be a director if you wish :)

I liked the subtle effects and blur masks. Nice job !

Only a suggestion, in the timecode shots, a small shake in the center area should create an interesting heavy feeling.

Congratulations !

Man, this is some great stuff! Thanks for posting it. What was your lighting package for when the girl was drinking wine at the table? Thanks.

How did you crop the balck bars off for 2:23:1 ?
I've been searching for the answer for this for ages.
Cheers.

Well the original FCP sequence was 720P (16:9) and I matted with 2.35 filter.

Cropping off the bars: if you saw the Flash version, I did it in Flash Video Encoder. If you saw a QuickTime version with the bars cropped off, I did that in Final Cut Pro by creating a custom sequence with the 2.35:1 aspect ratio, placing the 16:9 letterboxed HD aster within it and exporting the small .mov's from there. For DVD I leave it as a 16:9 file, through Compressor, so the whole image will display on screen (minus overscan). Maybe somebody has an alternative method, this is just how I've done it.

A single 1K softlight. There is some serious post filtering going on, so it'd be dishonest for me to say the look of those shots of her is simply lighting. I would've preferred to nail the look in the acquisition stage but I didn't have it totally determined at that point. Thank you for looking and for your positive feedback.

Thank you. Good suggestions. BTW, my good friend Isabel Machado (who works in Salvador Bahia now) had a heavy hand in the look of this video. I like to think she brought a Brazilian sensibility to the project:)

Hey Ben,
Thanks for the info I was refering to the QT version.
What aspect ratio or frame size do you use for 2:35:1, my maths a little rusty.
Cheers.

You can just crop them off in Compressor. Super duper easy.
I must be missing something but I can never get compressor to crop.
What are the exact settings I need to use for say a full size 720p (16:9) movie cropped to 2:35:1 in compressor.
Many Many thanks in advance.

The aspect ratio is itself 2.35:1, so just apply that to whatever size you want your product to be.

My original sequence was 1280x720. So, 1280/2.35=545 (roughly). 1280x545. My web versions are much smaller but the same aspect ratio.

I don't know how to use Compressor for actually cropping or masking off part of the image. I only use Compressor for encoding HD files down to MPEG-2, to either 4:3 or 16:9. For wider I crop either in FCP or in Flash Video Encoder.

Thanks Ben :)

So for say a web export width of 580 you get a hight of around 247 (580 divided by 2.35). I didn't realise the math was in the aspect ratio lol (I faild math due to other interests).

I have found out how to crop with compressor now !!! All you need to do is go to inspctor and crop about 88 top and bottom ( drag the red lines to crop the image in the viewer). Then the imporant bit is to make sure you imput the correct 2:35 custom frame size into the custom frame size fields (and not a regular 16:9 frame size as I was doing), see screenshot:
