Hvx + Varizoom Flowpod

Hi folks. (again)

I think a Varizoom Flowpod would really help me with some shots I'd like to get.

Can anyone who is using one with a HVX tell me if I'll need the extra counterweights when purchasing? The site seems to suggest I should but then goes on to tell me it's fine not to... so I'm confused :undecided.

Any other comments on a Flowpod/HVX combo would be most welcome too.

Thanks guys!

I have a Flowpod but I have never considered putting my HVX on it -- I don't spend enough time at the gym to be able to work that combination.

However, I will test that combination and see if the HVX can be balanced on the Flowpod with the stock weights. I'll get back to you.

No way, no how.

I tried the HVX with just the battery and stock lens hood, no mike, sitting on a Manfrotto QR plate attached to the Flowpod.

Even with the monopod section extended all the way and the three stock weights positioned as low as possible on the Flowpod, the camera is still too heavy and will not balance.

You might be able to make it balance with extra weights, but the combination will be very heavy and likely unusable without a vest and spring-loaded arm. If you need to keep the telescoping monopod section extended to balance the Flowpod, it will also limit your mobility and eliminate the ability to get low angles.

That's a pity - I'll definitely have to rethink that plan! I'll post here if I come up with something else.

In the meantime, I cannot thank you enough for taking the time to do a trial run for me, it was so helpful - I'm genuinely touched... have a great weekend!

I've got it and the EXTRA weights are barely enough - and as THOFF pointed out its kinda heavy... Actually got mine for the low flo mode mainly and it works really well for that for SHORT takes...

OK, so a little research later and I think I have found something a little more practical for my needs. The DVRigPro.

The homepage is here... http://www.dvtec.tv/id27.html

and Jarred Land has a review here... http://www.dvxuser.com/articles/dvrig/

I'm trying to find out how quickly I can mount my HVX to my manfrotto tripod (503 fluid-head) from the DVRigPro... I'll need to do it under a little pressure. The rig uses a Bogen QR plate. In Jarred's photo's it looks a lot like my Manfrotto plate, so maybe they're interchangable. Anyone out there any thoughts on that?

Thanks again!

I don't know if they are in fact the same, but you can always put a Bogen/Manfrotto QR plate on the DVRigPro -- that's what I did with my Flowpod:

Postscript - Just been in touch with Danny @ DvRigPro HQ, sorted out any possible issues. Very nice guy to do business with. Have ordered, paid, and looking forward to trying it out in week or so (hopefuly)!
