HVX Varicam match

Here's a scene file that I wrote in the field to match my HVX to a Varicam in Doc setting. Try it out if you like.

Shane.

It's for a pbs show that I shot B camera on. The producers were looking at the viability of shooting the show on the HVX as opposed to the Varicam.

Although it looks a lot more noisy, i thought that cinelikeD on the HVX would match the contrast of the Varicam better than cinelike V.

Maybe i am completely wrong, but the Varicam has a lot of lattitude to my eyes.

Could you post a frame grab of the same scene from both camcorders ?

thanks

That is interesting,
V DETAIL LEVEL: 5
V DETAIL FREQ: THICK

Seems like you are raising one level and then turning it
off with another? Did you compare shooting with
no V DETAIL LEVEL and shooting in THIN?

Thats a good point, the basis of this file was taken from an SD version so the V detail freq had been set to thick and then transferred over. Try it yourself- change recording setup to an SD mode, change the V detail Freq in the scene file , then change back to HD. In HD the V detail Freq selection is blued out so I am guessing that it has no effect on the HD format. I'm going to record some frames and see , though. Thanks for pointing this out.

Antoine,
cinelike D does have more latitude but cinelike V was , to my eyes , the better setting as it was less noisy and therefore a better match. Notice that I raised the pedestal to 3 in order to get more information in the blacks. I set the camera up in the field with a Chroma Du Monde chart but would like to really dial this setting in. Any suggestions are welcome.
One thing I did notice was that the varicam was picking up a green cast on the left side of his face and the HVX was just not seeing it although all the other colors were matching really well, I would assume that this was due to the increased sensitivity of the varicam.

Hi Shane,

If you could post a frame from each camcorder, i am very curious.

Indeed the HVX frame grab is clean. A little contrasty ( but sometimes that's what we want ). The cinelike V will always produce a much cleaner image than streching a cinelike D image (to increase contrast) in post.

thanks

Antoine,
I don't have access to the varicam footage, but believe me the two cameras were almost indistinguisable apart from the different depth of field. The varicam had a documentary setting which is not the standard "out of the box" scene file but I believe that the HVX could match any of the non-extreme scene files.
