HVX Used in The Departed

I just got back from talking with Rob Legato and Ron Ames at UCLA. First these guys had me laughing for almost a full 3 hours. Rob Legato is a very funny person.

Rob has done many visual effects, from Titanic, Apollo 13, The departed and The Aviator just to name a few.

Ok HVX news....(In the film)
They love the camera and think it is the best of the cameras out there for 5-6 grand range. They had to film a shot very last minute of a stand in who holds up a picture in "The Departed" in place of Di Caprio's character. It was really funny the story told about how rushed it was, so they used their HVX and filmed it really quickly and no one is the wiser. Talk about how well the HVX holds up.

Ron and Rob told me what they liked about it

They love the workflow. They said it was the best workflow around and that it speeds up production time so much for them.

They told me the camera just takes incredible pictures over all of the other lower end cameras. They said it excels in close up and medium type shots. Not so good in long shots, but just works very well over all.

There only complaint about the camera was the PCMCIA format because it was a little outdated. But they still love it so it is no big deal to them.

All and all it was very fun to hang out with them and hear them tell stories from all of the their work. They love the HVX and it is used almost every week in the stuff they do.

Oh and they use Mostly Adobe Products. (After Effects...)

Just thought you guys would like to know about the HVX in the movie THE DEPARTED for a shot.

Thanks sinfear11,

I think that it's great that you are sharing this here. :)

It's good to know that these guys have a respect for the HVX. Also cool that they use After Effects --- still a great piece of software for high end compositing and effects.
