Is it possible to record to the PC using firewire in 720p without having a P2 card in the slot? Im asking because i dont have a P2 card and im currently using the cam with miniDV tapes.. Ive heard using DV rack HD, u can capture HD to your pc.. but would a P2 card need to be in the slot for this?? :Drogar-Smoke(DBG):

Yes. You can capture without a p2 card in the camera. As long as your NLE supports live capture (or you are using dvrack), and you are not trying to capture pn modes, you will be fine.

great! what do u mean about the pn modes though? I wont be able to capture fopr example 720pn? also what about variable framerates .. like 50p? for slow or fast motion...?

Right. Firewire can't carry pn signals through its interface.

You can record any other format. Just not the pn modes. It has to be a 60i based codec. So 60i, 24p, 24pa, etc. will all be fine.

ok thanks.. unfortunately i downloaded the trial of DV rack and it doesnt allow HD cuz its a trial.. (jeez) .. does anybody know of any trial software which will allow for an HD recording to PC?

EDIUS Broadcast 4.x

The trial allows you to work with DVCPRO HD, and (I believe) is fully functional, except for that it doesn't have title motion pro and a couple of other things like that.

my bad, by the way. Here's a link to download the trial

*but if you aren't going to go with EDIUS in the end, don't get spoiled by it's realtime capabilities. Most other NLE's (none) aren't going to give you the realtime that you get out of EDIUS with DVCPRO HD.

A note: There seems to be a bug with 720 capture in general. It won't work for most people. Maybe it will for you. I'd be interested to know. 1080 should work real smooth like, though. If your system is decent (drive speed)

ok, any results i get i will post them.. i basically want to so some bluescreen tests 720 & also 1080 and also some stop animation on some miniature sets ive made. Its just I dont know what software i will get at the end so i'm looking for something robust and user friendly to do the tests with.
