HVX to 1200 Deck

Hi Guys,

Long time user, first time poster!

We're shooting a project using the hvx200. We will be working in a controlled environment (indoor stage) and will be shooting in either 720 or 1080.

We are hoping to feed the camera into an HD Deck and record the footage onto tape.

What is the best way to do this? Firewire? Component? What are the limitations to this workflow as far as image quality goes? Will the deck add any compression? Can we send all recording formats to the deck using this method? We are not concerned about mobility issues and the fact that we will be tied down to a deck...

Thanks in advance for your help!

Firewire is the best way to go, and there will be no limitation on image quality -- the 1200A will record exactly the same quality image as the HVX is producing. The deck will support 1080 or 720 mode.

720 24P native to DVC pro 100

Is this true for 720 24P native as well? Also, should I ever be concerned with glitches or occasional breaks in the media. For example, sometimes when I burn a DVD I get glitches.

Thanks

No native on tapes

No native on tapes

untold,

When you transfer/record/whatever to the AJ-1200 its going to have pulldown on it. So no it won't be true 24 (ie 24p Native). The native recording option is unique to recording to the P2 card itself.

As for the glitches, I don't think you should be concerned there unless you can't even play it back in the camera itself (in the thumbnail mode). I've run into some glitches as well after having moved the materials off the cards onto my system and the like. However, when doing my firewire records from Camera to AJ-1200, its all gone off absolutely perfectly. The tapes I've made have worked out great for me, knock on wood.

cheers.

We have been shooting a lot of interviews lately, running the HVX into the 1200. No problems, other than the fact that you better have a head cleaning tape handy. The 1200 seems to be VERY susceptible to head clogs, we have had three different rental decks from two different rental houses all have digital errors on PB from dirty/clogged heads.

Record at least five minutes of material, then play it back and look carefully.

Also, the 1200 has a digital "glitch" when monitoring the output (e-e). The picture will jump about every 6-9 seconds. The deck does not record this glitch, it's just in the monitoring. Hope they fixed this in the upcoming 1400 deck.

Other than these little gotchas, we really like shooting tape over P2 cards for sit down long interviews, it tends to work much more easily.

Best,

Dan

Had no probs w/ my AJ-1200

Had no probs w/ my AJ-1200

Sounds like your local rental places, or people borrowing their stuff, aren't treating the AJ-1200 very well. I've not had a single hiccup with ours and I've done well over 300 tapes now through it, running them through multiple times (dubbing off to DVD, logging, and digitizing). Also running I think 2 of them back home and haven't heard of anyone there having any issue with it (they're likely pushing 400/500 tapes per deck by now). Its been a rock solid VTR as far as I'm concerned.

The monitoring glitch is annoying. Certainly scared the hell out of me when I first started doing the HVX 200 to AJ 1200 records. Have just got used to it now. Though again we're primarily a Varicam shoot so not like I have to deal with it that often.

cheers.
