HVX - This is a long post...

marc, off topic a bit - a group of us a couple of years ago charged into Dublin City to see your film Dark Days which left us all stunned - genuinely one of the most powerful pieces I have ever seen and was relieved that the film offered an ending with hope - very off-template for these kinds of subjects. Needless to say your film provoked conversation for ages afterwards and stays with me today. Definitely up there with the best docs ever made. Good luck on your new project and I look forward to seeing it.

I'd be interested in your P2 workflow. You don't even seem to mention the short recording times in your write up which I thought was a little odd..?

I'll have to try and get a copy of Dark Days, it sounds awesome.

If I'm not mistaking here, Marc has got filmstocks from Kodak free to make the Dark Days. Panasonic should give him a few 8gigs P2 cards.

My first film was about a community of homeless people living in a tunnel beneath NYC. It was called ‘Dark Days’ and was shot on 16mm film.

I'd just like to second the comments by a few that "Dark Days" is a remarkable film. It has a truly unique perspective, and challenges the viewer to see things from others' points of view. I completely recommend people check this film out. It's really quite something.

And thank you for your thoughts on the HVX -- they were encouraging and informative in a very practical way!

Marc, great post - a "real world" perspective. I am sure your background in filmmaking makes for a disciplined approach to shooting. A few questions: are you going to use any of the footage shot with the JVC in this production? Are you shooting around RF interference or Radar?? I have shot BetaSP aboard aircraft carriers and the dreaded RF interference ruined many a good shot. Those were shoots were a Arri SR would have made a big difference.
Thanks

great post Marc

great post Marc

I’m in the process of completing a DOC, well it all depends on how fast my FATMAN WALKING client walks to NY...... hopefully my March.
I’ve been using my trusty DVX-100, but it’s been having a few problems with the Iris lately. Thought about the 100B to complete this film, but if the 200 did alll that and more, that would be my choice.

The whole P2 card thing scares me, I sometimes shoot 2 hours or more a day, and it’s just me on the road.
I’d love to hear how you’ve solved the P2 solution so far.

Has anybody seen SD footage shot 4:3 from the 200? Wondering how it looks compared to the 100.

Marc,

I also commend you on a great doc. I watched it twice the first day I had it. Good luck on your new project.. sounds like a unique experience. Also, very comforting to know that a working/award-winning filmmaker is taking the same plunge and is so happy with the gear.

I just think it's so sour for people to chime in with negative comments on the P2 run tiem and the cost? Haven't any of you shot film before? For the cost of my last film project, I could have bought a 100 4 gig p2 cards. On a documentary, where ratios are like 200 to 1, the price is astounding.

I'm sure that others will be joining suit and following Marcs lead on this. I personally was going to go into debt and shoot on a varicam or an SR3 for this project, and thankfully now I'll be able to pull it off for a fraction of the cost.. and hey... at the end of the gig, I'll own the cameras. We also are talking about a brand new project..a and the firestore wll be here, as well as other great options. It's a major shift here.

I do also think that people like to knock something that has so much Buzz and excitment. Can't say that about any of the other HD camcorders.

the short recording times would not bother a documatarian who is use to working with film, shoot quality not quantity, but unlike film spools Marc can pocket the p2 cards...

Hi Marc,
I'm a very big fan of Dark Days (actually own a copy... a legal one). Joined this forum just now to let you know how valuable feedback like yours, from a working fillmaker, is for me. Thanks also to Barry for the great job in trying give us an objective and technical comparison. This is truely an internet forum at its best.

Marc:

Awesome, man. So great to hear. Thank you for sharing your recent experience! My HVX is on order and I hope to get mine within the next one or two shipments. Good luck and I look forward to watching your films someday!

Cheers,

We carry everything on our backs including food and water, ammunition, communication equipment and a whole bunch of other gadgets (In my case, film stuff). Like I said, this is a direct action platoon and I’m right behind them the entire time. Needless to say, whatever camera I choose to use was going to get the poo poo kicked out of it. That’s why I need so many - I fully expect them to break.
I hope that you'll have some sort of generating system with you to charge the batteries. I'm not sure how long the group goes out on a mission before you can return to a base, but power for the equipment out in the field will become a big issue.

Sounds very cool!!!
