HVX stolen at NAB?

I just read in this month's issue of Studio magazine that the HVX mock-up at NAB was stolen! That is so lame but it does answer one thing I mentioned a while back when I was posting my photos from NAB. The camera was a non-working mockup. Someone argued with me that it was a working prototype.
Another plus for subscribers of this magazine is a great article on the camera by none other than our very own Barry Green.
Check it out it you get a chance.

That's bogus, how did they even steal it in the firrst place? It was either in a glass case or in a spokesmans hand.

It's true which is sad in two ways. One: those mockups were worth a fortune, far more than the production cameras will be. Two: they are completely unfunctional pieces of wood and plastic. So whoever took it probably threw it away after realizing this.

Apple had one sitting there that anyone could have walked off with. Cut the cable and out the door.
It wasn't stolen from the Apple booth, according to the article; "...Someone stole an AG-HVX200 DVCPRO HD P2 camcorder from Panasonic's booth..."

I bet it was Sony.

The article finishes with, "Good thing the unit was only a wood-and-plastic mock up. If you see an HVX200 on eBay, ask if the camera floats."

But you know what's really funny about all of this. In a place with so many video cameras running, nobody manages to capture anything on the person who steals the mockup, how ironic is that.

I’ve had lots of equipment stolen at trade shows; I didn't read this article so I don't know what happened in this case, but most of the time it is stolen after hours or during setup or tear down by other people working at the convention. Often times equipment gets packed in a different box that it was shipped in and found much later while setting up for the next show. But either way I doubt it was stolen by an attendee walking the show floor.

ChuckS is right. A couple years ago a Sony BVW75 BetaSP deck was stolen by a Teamster on the loadout. It turned up a few days later and he was busted on the COPS in Las Vegas show trying to sell it for $2k.

Not being a smartass or anything.....but how is the *balsa* wood mockup worth a "fortune"?

Is it really that valuable....moreso than a fully functional camera would be?

I guess if they ONLY made a few they could be invaluable to Panasonic for *show and tell* purposes.......

.....it's pretty damn sad either way.

Well that's nothing

Well that's nothing

I know some folks who know some folks who know some folks who've acquired a couple of EXPENSIVE Panasonic Variframes or whatever those north of $50K cams are. Plus some other stuff. Amazing what falls off of trucks. Idiots actually asked me to help them sell them. I said suuuuuuuure, plenty of folks wanna shell out $75K for a warranty less product.

I'm not really worried about who stole it because it will eventually be found later. My question is, that damn HD Panny is made out of wood?

Yeah I remember the day it happened and If I remember right I think your speculation is very accurate Chuck. I wonder if Stuido Mag was supposed to make the theft public.. i don't know if everyone knowing about it may help get it back or make it go deeper into the back of the truck.

Anyways, Its not made out of balsa wood... The mockup (which we played with remember) is made out of epoxy.. and is wieghted to an accurate scale. If you could of felt the camera, it would of been very hard to realize it wasnt real, untill you tried to turn it on.

But before you go and jump on some poor guy setting up the next tradeshow for having the HVX mockup in his hand, realize that there was more than just one made.

I have, it shoots awesome video.

Of forests.

It would be perfect for filming a remake of "Tree Days of the Condor" eh?

or any of Woody Allen's flicks...

or a sequel: "The Reservoir Dogs Bark" ... etc. etc.'

... nor should we forget "Forest Gump" ...

or ... okay, I'll quit. ;-)
