HVX show and P2

I just saw the demonstration by Pany at Birns & Sawyers' new location in Hollywood by the Archlight.

It wasn't given by Jan, but some other dude. He was really pushing the P2 and the ideal capture method, stating that they will NOT be licencing this technology to anyone so there will not be any competition against them for the cards.

I think he made a mistake though, by suggesting he thinks the cost of a 4gig card will come down to around 100bucks within a year. This means I will NOT be buying any cards with my new HVX. I'll just go straight into a laptop and wait for the price to come down.

However, if he's right and the price drops to 100 for a 4 gig, then I see myself owning at least 6 of them next winter, if not a dozen or more so I can do live events in HD

On a side note, I was impressed with the new Panasonic 17" HD LCD monitor. Bad news is it's nearly 3 grand. ouch.

I thought Jan said that they would licence the Tech out to other companys. Has this changed?

I went to this demo also...my second. The first was at the Egyptian with Jan.

The footage there was 720p, and looked very good, I thought. But that was my first impression. My second impression was from the 1080p footage shot by Jay Nemeth.
It's some of the same footage posted by Barry online. On a screen about 20 x 20 it looked videoish to me. The exterior desert shots had sky and clouds that looked like hot or clipped video.

It also was videoish in the sharpness, and contrast...maybe the resolution is too high for the latitude?

Anyway, if anyone is expecting that this camera, or the canon/sony/jvc hdv cameras can replace 35mm film cameras or compete with the Varicam or Cine Alta cameras, my guess is they will be disappointed.

I've seen footage from the Cine Alta 700 (or whatever the cam is that is not the 900)
and the Varicam. I liked the Varicam footage, and not so much the CA 700. ( Very different types of footage though)

The Varicam has 11 stops of latitude? and the HVX is 6-7?

Anyway, it's a good camera, and Panasonic deserves credit.

I'm glad I saw some footage twice and tried to be 'objective' instead of getting overexcited and spending so much money on one. (I don't really need it, because I am not a pro DP, or pro videographer).

I'll wait 12-18 months and see what options are available then.

No, this will never "replace" a cam like the Varicam or Cinealta, but then it was never intended to.

What this camera will do, is become the cam of choice for indy filmmakers on tight budgets.

I also suspect this cam may become the one of choice for many news outfits as well as some reality and doc outfits.

I didn't care for the footage either, but that wasn't footage I judged the camera on. That screen was crap and I think the calibration was off, seemed to have too much magenta in it. By the way, this was the case with the others as well.

As far as 35mm being replaced: it already has been in the eyes of some famous directors like Lucas and Rodriguez. I don't think film will ever die, but it won't be the only choice as it has in the past.

Birns & Sawyer moved to the Arclight? Damnit! I missed that one! How did you guys hear about this?

They're bihnd the archlight, on Delongpre.

They haven't moved in yet, it's still under construction, but I think they'll be in there by Jan.

Good news is no more parking problems, and they validate. Lucky for me, I can walk there.

They had fliers at the DV expo, but I heard when I went by to check on delivery of my HXV.

I saw some info on this board. It would have been interesting to see what you had to say about it.

I can see now why you are considering a camera with larger chips and better
sensitivity....and better latitude?

I believe the Fast Runner was shot on digibeta and I like the way it looks, but I haven't seen it on a large screen.

The 720p at the Egyptian looked better I thought. I was wondering if the 1080p footage at B/S was shot at a slow shutter speed because there seemed to be a slight motion blur and stutter when the people in the shots moved..their whole bodies not just the hand in the guitar playing shot.
