HVX Settings

Hey All!

What settings do I use to get my film to look like "ILLEGAL?" (It's a film in the Screenschots section) Thanks!

According to the director...

"We used a few Nikon primes. 35mm f1.4 / 50mm f1.4 / 55mm f1.2 / 85mm f1.4 / 105mm f1.8. Scene file was set to Cine D, Master Ped -3, coring +2. Also, color correction was done in Final Cut Pro. I also messed with the curves a bit until the image looked right to my eye. No DaVinci here, nothing special. I love dirtying up nice HD footage."

The majority of the look you really want is done in post-production, in Final Cut Pro, by crushing the blacks, adjusting color saturation levels and finally adding noise. You just need to ensure your lighting, shadows and depth of focus fall in the right places before you import your footage in FCP.

Read the screenshots thread: He says that the "look" was really done with some clever color correction and shows several shots BEFORE the CC was done and they don't look too that amazing. Good CC can make ton of difference.

I also doubt that he added grain in post. He did say that he boosted the gain of the camera to make up for light loss from the M2. That's probably where you're getting all your grain.

didn't they say that the M62 adds a bit of grain/grain look, and the Redrock guys said nothing to the contrary... the image gets picked up from the "sand-blasted" looking glass wheel that spins inside of the adaptor, so I suppose that would be true to an extent... the spinning of the glass makes it so that you don't see it, we saw some great clips of a couple of guys that had just gotten their M2 back @ Jargon Entrertainment last HVX LA meeting, and those guys turned the M2 off on purpose and it added a strong grainy look... but it wouldnt be surprising if it added a bit of something grain like while spinning

I thought he did add noise because I was fiddling around with his before CC captures in Photoshop (I'm still not using FCP or HVX) to see exactly what was done in post. I managed to mimic just about all of Illegal's post CC in Photoshop, sometimes I couldn't quite get the look and in one case I think I improved on what they did because they washed out some nice highlights in one scene with too much saturated yellow light. This the one I mean:
