HVX/PS feature.. a small taste

Ok. threw up the grabs for all to see and most stated (as i usually do as well) they wanted to see movieng footage. So, for a limited time only.. I will post the very rough cut of said scene. No CC, this just raw HD small file and image size. Just keeping it simple. This is the last scene of the film, and should seem very vauge 1) because you have not seen all that has taken place and 2) because the other half of the phone call, along with the ring, ambient water sounds ect have not been added. Just the music tracks that fill out the scene and take us into the end credits (which will begin on black)

So for what it is.. enjoy. Atleast it gives you some idea. The general opinion when most see it is, "This is what Miami Vice should have looked like." Ironic enough, our lead was in Miami Vice as well as Bad Boys 2.

Looks very well produced, congrats on the feature. The flashframe device has become very popular these days, is that something you use through out? I'm toying with the idea of using it on my feature, just curious how you're feeling about it.

Miami Vice, the movie that was just released?...wow bold words, i could'nt disagree more, that movie looked great, not to say that your clip does'nt, but really is'nt a replacement for M. Mann's flick.

your clip looks really good though

Hey thanks all, appreciate the kind words.

as to the score.. you and i both. We have access to what is quite literally the premiere music library. So exclusive not just anyone can buy it.. You actually have to be aproved by the company based on your [prior and current work.

I am speaking of the remake... Let me first say, I am a huge Mann fan, one of my favorites being Collateral; because of the risks he took.. then came Miami.. As a movie, i really enjoyed it.. as to the look.. Well I am somewhat Biased, because I know what is capable and how he bassically took some very nice HD gear and made it look.. as bad as it could. I don't even necessarilly mind the Boosted gain, but there were cuts to shots that were just bad.. from a composition and pacing stand point. Being outside of it I still can cut slack, but i was in Miami as that was being shot.. have many friends who worked on it.. That movie cost over 120 MILLION dollars and they were in principal photography for over 6 months, with an additional 6 months of pick ups.. A year worth of shooting and reshooting and there are still bad shots in the movie?

A few months before release Michael mann was quoted as saying, "We have worked alot on this.. i just don't know if we got it." and some would argue he did not.

For the record the people who made those commetns are not in the film industry, they are just average everyday moviegoers, who thought Miami Vice looked like home video at times.. and i wish i could whole heartedly argue with them. I think the movie would ahve been better served if he had NOT called it Miami Vice and simply said, "This is what I always wanted to do with vice but couldnt" to many still went in expecting the pretty TV show.

Ok, enough Miami Vice talk LOL I would never say we are in Michael manns leauge.

Sorry Just realized i did not address your question..

Yes we do use the effect throughout. When we started ( I am head editor on the film BTW) my boss said he wanted something like the look achieved in man on Fire and Domino, but not an exact knock off.. something we could call our own. His only other requirment... It could not look like we used a plug in.. it had to feel random, organic.

On the first scene we spent a full week tweaking and trying new things. I wont get into the whole final process.. not terribly hard to figure out.. lets just say it it involves layering the same or different takes on top of one another.. sometimes speeding up or slowing down the clip and utilizing several plug ins for the effect.

The end result is cool and the really great thing is as an editor we always have that struggle between the best performance versus continuity. Of course the performance should win out but sometimes it is very difficult to make things work... enter the effrect we have come to simply call the flutter. Toss that over, and some sound design to back it up and your golden.. the best performances and beats can be achieved and your film is very styilistic. Of course that doe snot work for every film, but with this it deff does. This is a large ensemble film with alot of different elements and characters.. the erratic editing helps support and believe it or not clarify that. Freez frams on key moments and key characters as well as fluttering flashbacks through out help you stay up to date with what is going on.

So if it fits it can be a very useful tool. There you go.. very long answer to a short question.

Miami Vice looked great? Hmm... I guess if you like a 200 million dollar video.. I hated it.. Visually nauseating.. I'm from South Florida.. one thing we have here is COLOR, and warmth.. something the original series was good at presenting.. Even for the content, it was just wrong.. but thats just me and 90% of the peopel that saw it..
The movie was a sad representation of the original and of what Miami is and has become.. If I wanted to see a video looking reality show I would have turned on my TV.. I worked on it for 3 days, and only with the film cameras used in some of the stunt scenes (the only cameras that didn't break every five seconds, they should have shot it with the HVX!)

Thanks Justin.. yah being here and working in this indusrtry you could not help but here the stories during production.. That movie had probl;ems from the start..

Clip looked really good, M2 adapter? (not sure if that was mentioned)
Also thought the flash clips were done well, looked very 'organic' nice and Tony Scott.
on par with Miami Vice? hard to say. I presonally really enjoyed MV

Thanks Slimoothy, Darwin.., Troypod..

To answer your question Troy it is actually the PS technik adapter.. thats the expensive german version. We got a good deal though, alot having to do mwith the fact when they first made them for the DVX we litterally owned the very first one manufactured (serial #0000001 LOL) So we something fo a relatinship with them. I really like stuff I have seen from the M2 and redrock but the PS just seems a tad cleaner. Grain can be good but it is noce to be able to control such things in post.

The flutter edits are just a tad better when there is sound design to back them up.. but i am happy with our formula thus far. As far as being on par with MV.. image quality, yes and better.. story and acting ect,.. No I am not going there.. Michael mann is still.. well... the mann LOL
