HVX Promo video P2 question

So in the HVX Countdown video the P2 Tech chapter, the narrator explains that the memory in the P2 is simply (or not) SD Memory set up in a RAID configuration. I wonder how long until aftermarket P2 type cards are made available at a cosiderable savings? Anyone here good with a soldering iron?

I still want a P2 "shell" to come out. That way you can ugrade it yourself when higher capacity SD cards come out and it'll be easier to sell your older cards because so many devices use SD now.

It would be great if it were so simple! It seems though that it wouldnt be so easy...something like the "EProms" need to be reprogrammed, which would make it tough to upgrade.

If it is a simple RAID then it shouldn't be too hard for other 3rd party OEMs to step in and provide cheaper higher capacity cards soon. It depends if Panasonic has some patentable technology in there above and beyond a simple RAID which would keep the prices high for significantly longer. I am sure Panasonic wants P2 to hit big so I don't think they will try to own it.

A shell seems like a good idea. There's no need to get rid of the controller to bump up the capacity and the smaller SD cards could easily be reused in cameras, etc. But when juggling the individual SD cards you probably need to keep the same cards in the same slots in order to preserve any content in the RAID. When you upgrade, all the new cards would need to match in their operational characteristics: capacity, throughput, latency, error correction, etc.
