HVX Pal Version - Any changes?

I'm planning to get a brand new HVX really soon, and I couldn't help to read some assorted comments about the PAL version of this camera.

The fact is it is was once said to have more resolution, even a larger CCD. I'd like to know whether this is partially true or totally false :P

I live in a PAL country, but I intend to use this camera for film purposes only. So the price difference is enough for me to prefer the NTSC model, with its 24p mode and 2.5X slow motion. I've also read that editing support for the 25p mode is not not yet available in most NLE.

However, I'd consider the PAL one if it has any vital enhancement as it was once said to have.

Does any of you have the PAL version of this camera? Does it have any true difference from its NTSC sister?

Thanks!

hi simismo,

any chance you can tell me where you're buying from? Looking out for reasonable PAL HVX deals in europe and would sure appreciate any thoughts..

thanks,
stephen.

Stephen, I'm buying the camera, if PAL, in Argentina where I live in. It's quite expensive, but they offer quite a good package for residents -including free technical support, some goods and they even have agreements with Canopus.

I don't know, I'd buy it anywhere else because I've seen this camera much cheaper (retail price now is around 6500$) but the company owners want to have it that way. So let them!

I own a PAL HVX and I 'think' the only resolution difference is when you're recording in SD formats. However I'd be glad to be proved wrong ;)

If you live in a pal country, you should work in 25p, even if you are going to film.
You will have less problems with the sound, and mainly with the flicker of screens, hmi lights, fluos, etc...

To my knowledge, the PAL HVX 1080 is 1440 x 1080, whereas the NTSC HVX 1080 is 1280 x 1080.

At least you have these differences with DVCPRO HD 1080 compression ...

But the chip should be similar ...

Will anyone please confirm this? What consequences does it bring to normal workflow? I mean, I wonder why the resolution gets bigger. If the chip remains the same, then is it really any difference or it will look like a resized 1280 frame?
Now that I think about it, does it affect the aspect ratio -since only the horizontal res is altered-?

I find it quite inconvenient, the fact that every in-depth review of this camera has been done working with the NTSC version. Do you knows of some tests performed on the PAL?

The date of purchase it's getting closer and I'm not even close to be sure what to do. The flicker thing is true, but you can always correct that in camera. Besides, is that worth 2k?

It's because of the bandwidth. You have 50 Hz (or 25 fps) with PAL but 60 Hz (or 30 fps) with NTSC. To receive quite the same compression with both frame rates you would give 1080i50 a higher resolution or less sub-sampling ...

Right. The frame size is a little bigger on the PAL version, but he NTSC version has more frames per second. Either way it nets out to 100 megabits per second.

And then what about when we shoot 720 24p in a NTSC camera? Why the resolution doesn't change, compared to the 720 60i? Does the chip still work at 60Hz?

Besides this really interesting technical data, has anyone in deed TESTED the camera and found out it outputs a bigger frame?

Thank you again.

Thats right! We have a 'filmlook framerate' 25f/s for decades now, and with the HVX we have a higher resolution. Like the old PAL days where also the color was better.
