Get a firestore or use a laptop with DVVRack HD or DVCProHD capable capture Edit program, and shoot 100+ min of HD, and HD is why you get the HVX not DV. If you want to shoot DV get the 100 dont waste your money.

It is worth it to shoot DV50 or DVCPRO HD. Always

The HVX shoots nice DV, but it's still DV. I think I've shot less than an hour of DV on my HVX the last 5 months.

Firestore seems like the best option right now for flexibility. You can tape it on a Jib or Crane or snap it to anything else.

Like it a lot.
Wish I had the cash...

also what is dv50 AND DVCPRO hd? sorry, but im a bit new to this p2 technology.

DV can only be recorded to tape. DVCPro50 and DVCProHd can only be recorded to P2 or firestore or, etc, but NOT to tape.

DV is basically DV25. 4:1:1 color sampling 5:1 compression. DV50 is 4:2:2 color samplling and 3:1 compression. DVCProHd is basically DV100. It uses 4:2:2 color sampling and can use 100mbit of information.

DV and DV50 are Standard Definition Formats. DV100 is High Def at either 720P. 1080i or 1080P

Nor have I. While the deck is nice to have for long events, I can't imagine ever using it for anything else. Tape is really hard to put up with once you've used P2.

I'm using DV for a feature-length doc I'm shooting (not my choice), otherwise I shoot all P2 unless a client requests DV.

I've used it all of once just to make sure I could get 720p24pN and tape to play nice on an Avid timeline. I intended to actually use it when I ran low on memory card space but, when I got to that point, I just couldn't go back to tape. It just made more sense to offload and keep going.

Can someone please expalin in further detail what "color sampling and these compression rates, and how they effect the outcome of the footage...also dv100 how it uses 100mbit of information...thanks

Have a look at the DV page on Wikipedia, it explains the differences between the various DV formats, as well as compression and color sampling:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dv

The drive you are referring to is a Firestore, not a Firestone. It is a harddrive-based video recorder made by Focus Enhancements.

Essentially 4:2:2 color sampling that you get in DVCPro50 or DVCProHD has twice the color resolution as 4:1:1 that you get on miniDV tapes or the 4:2:0 that you get on HDV tapes. It's only compressed by 50% instead of 75%.

I've used the HVX to shoot DV footage in a couple of instances. In both cases I simply needed longer recording times than I could do with the one P2 card that I have (these were no budget shoots, so renting a firestore was out). I've been very pleased with the results, but in any case, when the option for P2 is there it's definitely the way to go.
