HVX P2 help

I rented an HVX for the weekend to shoot my daughter's baptism. Once I've transferred the cards to my mac, how do I clear the footage from the cards. I wish I had the Barry DVD and the guy at the rental store showed me how to do it with the cards in the camera, but have forgotten. I would really appreciate any help you could give. One other thing seeing as my final cut pro hd doesn't recognize the .dmg files is there a way for me to watch what I've shot on my HDTV before I erase the cards? This site is awesome and I appreciate any help you can give. Thanks

Personally, with such important footage, I would archive it.

You can copy all the files from the P2 card into a folder and then burn a DVD from it. A 4GB card fits well on a single DVD-R. The DVD will then act like a "virtual P2 card" and you and import footage from it later.

Then you have the original footage to import into Final Cut, Premiere, or whatever you need to later on.

You can test your "virtual P2" by ingesting the footage into Final Cut from the DVD using the [import]->[Panasonic P2] with the Browse option. This will copy the footage into FCP/Quicktime files in the FCP cache, which you can then view. Verify that you really have the footage before you erase the cards. You should test the copies in this way because on the mac, copying the cards has sometimes produced errors in the copies.

After you are certain that you have the footage you need and it is archived, then you can format the card in the camera. Its a relatively simple process. You can download the user manual from Panasonic in a .pdf and look up Format P2 to get the exact procedure.

Here is the HVX page:
http://catalog2.panasonic.com/webap...d=14571&modelNo=AG-HVX200&surfModel=AG-HVX200

Just click on the link that says "Operating Instructions" on the right side of the page and you'll have the user manual.

Since you rented the HVX, I assume the P2 cards are rented as well, and you don't want to leave the footage on the card before returning the gear.

Here is how to reformat the cards: place the HVX into MCR mode using the button to the left side of the back of the camera. Then press the MENU button on top of the camera, go to OPERATIONS, and select FORMAT. Each card (if you have more than one) needs to be formatted separately by selecting the slot it is in.

Thank you so much for the help. I have one other question. I just want to clarify that I'm doing this correctly. I take the p2 card put it in my powerbook. Go to disk utility and it see's the P2 matushita and no name P2, which do I select? In the past I've selected the P2 Matushita then I hit edit and new and save the file to my desktop. It saves it as a .dmg to my desktop. Is this correct? Thanks again!!

Dont know about mac,
but without worrying you, the ".dmg" thing sounds odd to me.
Just make sure that you treat the p2 card in your mac like an external drive: open the folder of p2, copy all the content, create a folder on your local disk(lets say "card01") and paste the content there!

You can give it a try in using the p2viewer (find the free download at panasonic homepage via the "search" function here) and selecting "virtual p2 card": when you browse the "card01"-folder now(while the p2 isnt in your mac anymore) the clips should appear in the player!
good luck!
