HVX on Car Rig

Havent used the varizoom rig, but check out the Cinesaddle - their website has some impressive examples on use on a car.

I've used the filmtools.com mounts on a couple occassions. I wouldn't hesitate to put my HVX on one. The one I used had an upgraded 6" cup instead of a 4"...steady as a rock. Easy to use, cheap, and fairly idiot-proof.

That rig scares me... only 3 cups and they are the press and stick plunger kind.

I haven't used it myself. But I do have their multirigpro unit and its made very well. I'm sure if you have any concerns about the car rig Danny makes he would be more than helpful to address them. And I wouldn't be surprised to hear that if you had any valid issues that he would adjust the design.

Stickypod? i'm not sure about this one. what I like about the suction cups on the Filmtools' web site is that they have a pump. you literally pump the air out of the suction cup. which provides for a tighter hold. This is what the pros use. The Stickypod just seems to have 4 rubber cups on each attachment. granted 4 cups is more than 1, but I have similar cups holding my bathroom soap holder and it doesn't hold all the time. I don't think I can trust this set up.
At least with the pump suction cups they have a red marker when they are loosing suction. these have nothing that would tell you its about to fall.
just my thoughts.

So that means I'm a pro?! Sweet...

Actually, the FilmTools mounts are so idiot proof...the pump has a little red marker on it telling you how 'suctiony' it is. If you see the marker pop out, give it another pump or two just to be safe.

And, guys, take time to tether your cam just in case.

The suction cups are not what is holding the DvCarRig, It is used with 4 safety straps which are essential for safe and firm car mounting. With the safety straps you can use it on any car and on any surface, dirty, old paint job, scratched, bent... with suction cups only you are limited to straight, flat, and clean surfaces... and you will always add some safety straps "Just in case"..

One last thing, Varizoom still have some units, but are no longer representing DVTEC and we do not have any service and warranty relations with them.

We've done 6 car shoots on the streets & freeways of L.A. with the FilmTools DIY rig and nary a problem. High speed, low speed. Plus the components can be used for other purposes as well, since they're general purpose pieces. Takes awhile to set up, even for an experienced grip, but very little time to tear down, and we reorient the camera on the rig when it comes time to dump cards, then get going again. Takes planning & workflow thinking, but well worth it if you need carmount shots.

This is the FilmTools rig. We used this on a NASCAR show at very high speeds without incident. You can really enhance the kit with three Cardellini clamps - we tied in through the Nextel car window netting to one of the interior cage components using longer rods.

I can't say enough about how good the Woods Power Grip cups are - but you still have to check them between runs.

I use the CineSaddle with the included hardware for strapping it down. Unless I really need to be off the side, then I've borrowed a StickyPod and liked it, too.

My preference for the CineSaddle is that it absorbs the road/vehicle vibrations way better than a solid metal rig.

MicroDolly Car Mount

MicroDolly Car Mount

Here is a link to the Car Mount we have been using:
http://www.microdolly.com/micro_6.html

It has worked great with the HVX.

We have mounted it externally on several cars, hood, doors, etc... and internally in a minivan, shooting out the rear (opened) side door for city street b-roll.

The only thing I'd change on it is to have a ball head mount rather than a plate.

We're using a ball head mount instead of the plate. Still requires serious time to reposition when required.
