HVX noise level, any tips ?

Hello everyone

I have searched a lot trough all forums I know, both french and english spealking ones but i would like to share with those who are having noise problems with their HVX.

I like this tool a lot. I used to work with a DVX before.

Noisy images are the worst thing on this camcorder. Before I do some more tests with a friend of mine, to try to learn how to cope with this noise, I'd like to know howyou guys are dealing with this issue.

right now I've only tried these :

- raising detail coring level (it gives a cleaner image, more softness, but looses detail ...)
- working with cinelike V instead or D (D is really flat in contrast and tries to bring as much information as possible within the image, also bringing noise actually !!) and cinelike V brings less noise, is more contrasty.
- playing with master ped in order to tell my camcorder : do not bring me details in my blacks (which means do not bring me noise !!!)

there are also other possibilities in post:

- shooting as flat as possible and stick black and shadows when doing post-production.
- shooting in the very high range of the curve (before clipping of course) and when in a serious post prod tool, sticking / contrasting only the low level information of my curve.

But really, do you have any tips before I consider this camcorder is only good for shooting in exterior bright day

Also, I shoot a lot with micro35 and playing with detail coring is just impossible with redrock and all that kind of tool because the image is much softer... So if i add detail coring level, it is gonna be even softer ....:(

thanks
fred

Hi,

Test these settings:

High gamma
0 h detail
-2 v detail (to avoid over sharpening when you use non cine gamma curve)
0 h detail
norm color matrix
+2 color level
0 detail coring
-5 master ped

...and then play with the iris to find the right exposure for this particular gamma curve.

try bpress gamma.
you don't lose the filmlike gamma but you lose the noise.

really did it for me.

thanks for your help !

after searching thru dvinfo also, I can see this issue is the biggest with this camcorder ...

have played a bit with your settings, trying to have a look at the video tools, curves, etc ...

seems that High Gamma and B press are far more better than cinelike from a curve pont of view

at this time, I 'll try to further explore B-press mode (with LOW or MID KNEE) wich give me a very flat (not too low, not too high in my RVB parade) and rich signal. Most of all, this setting gives me the less noisy image which is the reason I have asked for your help !

Master ped at - 5 (as antoine mentionned), used with b press (Xax) and proper knee and overall well exposed scene gave me a good and a rich base to work on post production.

I'll do some more test this evening with poor light condition.

Tomorrow i'll do some test with the micro 35 to search for a compomise between detail level and ...noise !

Yep,

...and setting the master ped at -5 wont make your shadow details dissapear, the info is still there and very visible. I would not go below -5 though.

High gamma will give you a less contrasty image, ideal for sunny outdoors.
BPress looks more contrasty.

Now, make sure to close your iris with High gamma, because the midtones and lower mids increase significantly.
